bareboat garbage

hey all-
counting down now, 28 days to go!
had a question about garbage from the boat. are there places we can dump it without paying someone?
any info would be great!

Most places you pay, its only $2 a bag. So I'm not sure why there's a need to avoid paying.. But there are some spots I think you probably can.

the charter base for sure, if you want to haul garbage around.

Trellis is also free, at least it was in April.

But why would you want to not pay for garbage disposal?

I personally pay those who come around to the boat collecting garbage. This is a great convenience for a 70 year old grandmother.

There is a dumpster in Cane Garden Bay near where the ghut crosses the road and one in Great Harbor JVD going towards Foxy's from the main dock.

The guy that came by us at white bay was asking for 3 bucks for white bags. 5 bucks for black bags. Nope

it's not that I don't want to pay, I just know there are some spots were I wouldn't have to. trust me, I'm not talking about making some sort of special trip to dump trash!

In Cane Garden Bay, there is a dumpster on the road about 20 yards to the right of the fuel dock.

Any green dumpsters are open for trash. Sometimes they are a little hidden but they are around. At CGB it's about 100 yards west of the police station just across a small bridge, Little Harbor about 100 yards to the north of the dock next to Ivans.

BTW..of you see an orange VW Thing it is not garbage receptical!!Some seem to be colour blind green/orange..

This past Thursday we were at Great Harbour, JVD and there's a sign posted saying that garbage now has to be dumped in the bin by the ferry dock (along with "Sorry for the inconvenience"). While walking there with garbage in hand, Vinny from Corsairs stopped in his truck and asked if we needed help - then pointed us toward a closer bin behind and to the right of the school.

Westend near the ferry terminal as well...

Not sure where you're chartering from, but if from the USVI, upon return you will be asked the question: "Are you bringing in trash from the BVI?"

One thing to mention, please don't store trash in the engine rooms. The heat really makes it smell and the bags often get ripped going in and out and leak a hard to clean mess!

For $2, $3, or even $5 a bag to have someone take the trash off the boat is a miniscule amount of money to pay so that odors, and more importantly, BUGS, don't invade the boat! Just my opinion. I'm all for dumping my own trash - believe me, but I really would rather not have bags of trash sitting for even a full day in a small, warm environment!

Trellis Bay has a bunch of dumpsters at the airport side. VG Yacht Harbor has dumpsters on the west end (SW probs). By the street.
Failing that, just drop it someone's dinghy!

Dinghy Drop...happens often...

We bring six or eight 13gal kitchen bags in our luggage and a few big lawn bags. Black, 40-60 gal size?

Toss the daily bags in the big ones and store in the front hatches on a cat. No problem even in the hatch with the generator. All week long!

Got em ready to be packed for our trip this week!

But WHY store them all week long? We typically empty out the trash at Soper's and Leverick at a minimum.

Matt...you are right, we do drop garbage at Leverick, as that is a mid week stop for us.

Never stopped at Soppers.

Use the plastic grocery bags obtained when provisioning take a few ashore every time and find a trash can. If that's inconvenient, or you can't find trash cans, just have everyone grab a bag or two when you're somewhere you can pay to dispose of larger quantities.

Also, if you're chartering out of the USVI you're supposed to dispose of any "international" trash (open things that can spoil) before coming back. It's ridiculous. However, we do it. I give our left overs to the nice kid that works at the ferry dock in Great Harbor, JVD and then dump as much trash as I want in the nearby dumpster.

She always talked about getting bath mats on her boat, then suddenly dissappeared.

Dharma's husband Doug had a bout with cancer earlier this year so they have been sticking close to home lately.

As Twanger and justaroofer mentioned, you can't bring garbage, meat or produce from the BVI to USVI. Even if you bought everything in the US, it has to be disposed of before you check in with US C&I. There is a USDA inspector at Cruz Bay customs. If you answer "yes" to the trash/food question you'll have to bring your trash to the incinerator on St. Thomas. Until they renovated the parking lot, there was a dumpster outside of the C&I office. There are dumpsters near the NPS Visitors Center and their dinghy dock, as well as trash cans for cruisers at most NPS moorings; Leinster Bay trash cans are in the Annnaberg parking lot.

Are you saying that if we charter out of BVI, and go into USVI we have to dump all food? or is it opened food? what about frozen meats? It has been a long time since we have gone over to USVI, and I do not remember these issues before - or perhaps I was just ignorant of them.

as Nancy Reagan said, "just say no", on a month trip we go between US and BVI 5-6 times a trip. Sure we are going to throw away all our food every time. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" />

It's my understanding is that, by the letter of the law all "international" trash, which includes any food that could spoil, must be discarded before entering the US. Our briefer hinted that if we only had aboard food/drink that was unopened, sealed and not going to easily spoil (think a box pop tarts in the unopened original packaging vs. a new unopened loaf of bread) we would be okay. This was our second trip in three years and never any hint that we might be inspected. In fact, this time they didn't even ask.

The USDA lady is not always at Cruz Bay. If you say that you have anything that is controlled they'll ask you to take it to the incinerator on St. Thomas. We "just say no."
