Thoughts on Voyage Yachts

Thoughts on Voyage Yachts - 04/14/2016 03:30 PM

I'm considering a Voyage yacht for our next charter and would be interested in hearing from others who have sailed them.

We've charted a few Leopard cats and enjoyed them but interested in trying something different.

Appreciate any thoughts.

I have chartered with them multiple times, all with a great experience. Because my crew are often scuba divers, we really like the swim deck across the back of the boat, not usually seen on other cats. West End (Soper's Hole Marina) also seems to be convenient for our travel into St. Thomas and continuing on the ferry. The marina has several restaurant options, plus a nice market for provisions ... as well as a dive shop for renting tanks. The people at Voyage Charters have stated they are in the process of obtaining fishing licenses for their boats, but don't know what they have finalized, if anything. The boats also have WiFi aboard for a fee, and most have water makers and air conditioning.

We just finished our 2nd charter with Voyage, having previously chartered through Moorings and Sunsail numerous times. Voyage has been great- the service is terrific and very personal. The boats are well maintained and if there is an issue, it is dealt with quickly and by someone who really knows the boat. Also, Sopers Hole is just a great place to begin and end a charter. Couple of good restaurants, the market, a few shops. All you need. While our kids miss the pool at the Moorings base for that first afternoon, we find the trade off worth it. At Charters end, we usually come back into base late in the day before we leave, and the thing about Sopers is that it still feels like vacation - personally, I don't get that feeling in Roadtown. And I'm a fan of the Voyage boats. I think they perform really well, and are super fun to sail. We will go with Voyage again for sure. Hope this is helpful.

Voyage with TMM is at the top of the BVI operators and owners. Voyage is one of the few fleets where some owners have more than one boat in the fleet at the same time. Most of Voyage business is based on repeat business from veteran charters and veteran yachtsmen. If Voyage has the boat that meets your needs and dates you cannot go wrong with Voyage.

We'll be going on our 18th Voyage charter in June and can't say enough good things about them. It's more of a "boutique-ish" operation where they know you by name and you're not just a number. The boats are well-maintained and you'll actually know your boat's name before you get there if you want to have crew shirts made. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

They also recently added a video briefing of the Voyage 520 on Vimeo:

We chartered a Voyage 520 a few years ago. It was our first time chartering a cat and we have since chartered a Lagoon and a Fountaine Pajot. In my opinion the Voyage offered better performance and was more responsive both under sail and under power. The tradeoff is that it might not have quite the creature comforts that the big three offer. Don't get me wrong, they are plenty comfortable and well outfitted, you just won't find a flybridge or a forward cockpit on a Voyage if those kind of things are important to you and your crew. Personally, I would prefer to charter a Voyage over any of the other boats I've been on. As a matter of fact, I was just looking at the Voyage website yesterday with thoughts of a Winter or Spring 2017 charter. I'd love to get some time on one of the new 480s.

Also, as others have said, the location of the base is nice with a Pussers right next door and groceries just a few doors down. The staff is also very personable and they do a great job keeping their boats in top condition.

Voyage does a good job at the base level in the BVI. They have a good staff and take care of the customer. To suggest however the owners have been happy is not quite the case. I was the third owner to remove his boat from the fleet. In the 3.5 years my boat was in the shared revenue program I was not paid a single payment that was on time. Most were months behind. The payments were also pennies on the dollar compared to what they put out in the prospectus despite my boat bettering the net income goals and weeks of charter. In general the only answer I got from them is that times were hard and the wire transfer must have gotten lost.
Having posted those negatives one of the owners came in as a white night and purchased a large chunk of the company and it is my understanding that they are no longer owned by Voyage Yachts but are now a independent company. The big issues for owners were with the South African arm of the company.
I am coming up on the first year of ownership with a Moorings cat and it will have generated more revenue to me then the entire 3.5 year period I had a cat in shared revenue with Voyage. In fact it will better the Voyage number by about almost 60%. That's a 1 year verses 3.5 year comparison!

We have chartered several times with Voyage, specifically their 50' cats. Even the "older" boats are in pristine shape and perform well. Their base in Soper's Hole is especially pretty and fun when taking newbies (some of the bases in other areas are sketchy). The market is convenient and has almost anything you need. The Pusser's is perfect for first night/sleep aboard when you've been traveling all day and want that first painkiller and don't have provisioning yet. We agree the service is top notch and we love working with Susan when booking. They aren't the cheapest but I'd say the best.

On our last trip (Thanksgiving 2015) we flew into St. Thomas and took a private water taxi into Soper's Hole. Definitely the way to go! While ferry price tag seems shocking at first, it's actually less than the hopper flight we used to take from Puerto Rico to Beef Island. Dropped us off at our Voyage boat and picked us back up too. We used Ocean Dreams and felt like VIPs!

You can't go wrong with Voyage.

Cheers!

Haven't sailed on a voyage, but have been on them at boat shows. Biggest thing that stands out to me is the helm. I love the helm on the Leopards with it being raised up and all lines led to it. Easy for one person to manage and easy to have others help.
