cigar smoking on beach?

cigar smoking on beach? - 04/24/2016 09:23 PM

What are the rules/laws regarding smoking a cigar on the beach or in other open areas? Even if it isn't illegal does everyone hate you if you smoke a cigar outside? I love a good cigar but not at the expense of ruining someone else's good time!

I wonder if most people like me who once smoked but no longer (quit 30 years ago) feel like I do? I friggen hate being around smoke! I can smell it from a car ahead of me on the interstate, from other cars at stop lights, from who knows from how far when anywhere downwind. Really bugs me when a smoking area is right outside of a non-smoking building. Fortunately, I can hold my breath a long, long time. Irritates the heck out of me. 2nd hand smoke, it's hateful, to me, anyway.

Former smokers are the worst anti-smokers, yes.

Never smoked a day in my life, but unfortunately live with a long time smoker.. The BVI technically has a non smoking law in public places, I think?? ...which includes beaches?

Be considerate, keep some distance, I've never had a problem. Never tried it at CGB on cruise ship day, though.

As a cigar smoker - you'll be as welcome here as anywhere else - and, it isn't the authorities that'll likely give you grief - lol

Go to the cruise ship pier. Cigar bar there.

In total agreement Subaqua. Only difference is I can't hold my breath that long! Someone smoking in a car two ahead with their window open, mine closed and AC on, stank me out yesterday.
I always snigger at men smoking cigars as many years ago I was told that the size of a mans cigar is in direct opposite to the size of their 'proudest' possession! Large cigars = <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

Smoking in the BVI is prohibited in public buildings and within 50' of bars and restaurants. I see no problem with smoking a cigar on the beach. Done it many times.

Had a lady years ago giving me the stink-eye for firing one up....in CUBA. I was quite a respectable distance from her and aware of wind direction, etc. Politely suggested maybe she should have gone to the DR instead.

Second hand smoke is safer then the exhaust from vehicle, outboard motor or bad breath <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif" alt="" />

Thanks All--we'd rather have friends than cigars so we will use our best judgement on this one!

While I love good cigars and brandy even more. In this century what you do on your own should be your own business. When you can see and hear others smoking today is just plain wrong no matter what some legal authority might say or not say. That applies to parks, beaches, anchorages. sidewalks or anywhere were others are within eyesight or earshot. Go somewhere totally alone if you must smoke. Whether we like it or not our smoking habits are fouling the air and space of the other around us. When I can hear or see other the smoking lamp is out.

I looked Cuba up for you.

HAVANA TIMES — Cuban authorities are currently working on a new anti-tobacco legislation that will provide the framework for tougher restrictions on smokers....

"In Cuba, smoking is prohibited in enclosed or air-conditioned public places, including offices, theatres, meeting halls, stores, and public transportation, as of February 7. 2005."

Between current politics, who should go to what bathroom and second hand smoke, I really need to plan to sail away on that boat sooner rather than later....

If you can do that in a yugely classy way while insulting just the right groups at the same time? You could own the ferry and sewers debacles by Christmas. Video or it did not happen by the way.

Don't read so much into the word "hateful". It simply means something disliked, unpleasant, unappealing. Like.. I find cleaning the gutters on the eaves hateful.
You'd know if I hated you.. if I said.. I hate you for smoking that cigar. Now that might be some kind of micro-aggression as you call it, but surely, saying "I think second hand smoke is hateful", is far from any kind of aggression.
Some folks just have to get over it! Now there, that's some kind of micro-aggression for ya! smile smile

That low key definition might be what you meant, but the common Webster's definition does not agree with you....

adjective hate·ful \&#712;h&#257;t-f&#601;l\
Popularity: Bottom 40% of words
Simple Definition of hateful
: very bad or evil : causing or deserving hate
: full of hate : showing hate

This has been good (fun). When you mentioned Webster I remembered I had a huge New Lexicon Webster's Dictionary of the English Language on the shelf. After reading the webster's meaning that you quoted, I dug it out. I'm guessing they got lazy writing the meaning because in this big hard copy book it goes on to say about "hating to disappoint" and "hating the cold". Oh, how I'd hate to be the one who needs to get to my little safe corner. smile rackin' up the posts.. smile

Second hand smoke is not the end of the world to me however I grew up gasping in the back seat of a car as both parents smoked away.
What does drive me nuts is the near universal belief by smokers that they can throw the butts anywhere they want. On the ground at the entrance to buildings, beaches, out the car window ect....

Totally agree with George on this one..especially having burned my feet on disgarded beach butts..disgusting, rude and dangerous...

People who smoke just don't realize how bad tobacco smoke smells to others, especially those of us who are allergic. And while cigarette smoke is annoying, cigar smoke is unbearable. There's a man who sits on the bench about 10 feet away from the door of the local Starbucks, drinks a coffee and smokes a cigar. I have to hold my breath as I travel from my car into the Starbucks. It's not possible to sit on the beach and hold your breath while someone is smoking. What are the effects? My sinuses go to town and since I now have vertigo connected to sinus problems, it means that I could end up in bed for several days, unable to even turn on my side due to dizziness. Please think of this when you choose the location where you smoke.

That's really the bottom line here. It would be awesome if smokers (cigar, cigarette or weed) would just be considerate of those downwind or nearby on the beach. Everyone is on vacation and wants to enjoy their leisure time. Just be considerate...pretty simple.

I absolutely enjoy a good cigar on the beach, but yes I am very mindful of others, properly dispose of my trash, etc. I brought about 10 down with me last Oct/Nov for a three week trip and except for my wife, I would wager no one even saw me smoke them! Looking forward to bringing a few more down in exactly 50 days!

I will be having plenty of cigars on my trip in mid June as will the husband of the other couple joining us will be smoking cigars too. I will choose to smoke on the boat or if it's on a beach away from others not to bother them.

I love a good cigar, but have never had a cigarette or weed in my life. Either one of those irritate my eyes and lungs so I am very consciousness of my smoke, plus being considerate is a lost art these days.
