Land Based - Pro tips?

Land Based - Pro tips? - 05/16/2017 07:16 PM

Hello all....I've got a few questions below

There is a slight chance my wife and I would be able to step away and visit the islands for a 6-day land-based trip later next week. We'd be traveling light (packs) and could use points on STT and/or Scrub.

A couple of questions. Where would you stay on JVD for one night (cheapish). Maybe a step or two above the cabins at Ivan's?

We haven't spent night on VG before so thinking a night or 2 there maybe? Any reasonably priced 1/2 night accommodations suggestions?

I read the last land-based trip report and it looked pretty neat...I like the idea of heading to Anegada on ferry and spending night there, but that'd eat up some valuable time....

I'd just like to hear from those of you that have done this....we would prefer to be on water, but with just 2 of us, I think price-wise, it's just too much...especially with hotel points.

Any do-s/don't-s?

Any/all comments appreciated.

We did a land based trip in 2012. Stayed at Leverick for 3
nights and went to the BBQ/Jumbie show. Great fun. Spent a day traveling around the island, Hog Heaven, Baths, Savannah bay. We even rented a dingy and went to Bitter End and the Fat Virgin. We did do a day trip from there to Anegada ~ had a blast. The rest of our trip we stayed in Cane Garden Bay for 5 nights. Was awesome. Beach time, explored Tortola, day trip to JVD. Was great fun. Hope that helped a bit. We missed being on the boat but really enjoyed that trip and would do it again in a minute.

Ordinarily you probably wouldn't be able to find anywhere on JVD that would do a 1-night stay, but since you're almost booking "last minute", Sea Crest Inn would probably make an exception if they have empty rooms. Same with Ali Baba's. Price is right and you're right in Great Harbor.

Leverick is always a great choice on VG, but with the Poker Run I'd imagine they're booked up solid. smile I've also stayed at Mango Bay, right on the beach, but it's pricier and I think they also have a 3-night minimum?

You've got me curious as I've only been by boat... If doing land based at Leverick, what is the travel path from EIS/Trellis? Do you ferry to Spanish Town then taxi?

Or what are the ferry routes shown on BVI ferry route map that appear to show routes between Spanish Town, Leverick, Gun Creek, Saba and BEYC?

Is there a way to get all the way to Leverick by ferry?

If you're considering CGB on Tortola, I can recommend this Airbnb: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/9897805?gue...&s=_J_zXekD
Looks like it has availability 5/24-5/29. We stayed there last month and loved it. Have also stayed at Scrub - hopefully they aren't asking too many points per night!

My advice? Don't overdo it or you'll spend half your vacation, packing, unpacking and jumping on and off ferries..I'd go to one place and enjoy that island for six days..

I agree with Mal. Heck, I don't move that much in 6 weeks much less 6 days.

I agree with Malcolm too. If your only there for six days - pick one island and stay on it!! But if it's Tortola, then a day trip to JVD is defo poss!!! Oh no! Now I have DIF!!! Only one cure for this...

I am with the majority here. Pick an island and stay on it. Do day trips to other spots. I personally would stay on the West End of Tortola if possible.

THANKS to everyone for the comments...ran the #s backwards and forwards last night and it looks like we're going to just take a pass at the opportunity...I was really looking forward to being around during the Poker Run though, oh well...

There are lots of other accommodation on VG that won't be affected by the poker run - eg, bay view apartments, Fisher's Cove , M&M apartments cheers Brian

We typically sail as well. This was my second land based trip in the BVI's over 20+ years and I would not hesitate doing it again but staying 1 place makes it SO much easier. We would be busy 1 day and take it easy and relaxing the next so we didn't require a vacation from our vacation when we returned home. Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you...but you'll be back! and So will WE! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Wink.gif" alt="" />

We've done the island hopping for two weeks, which inspired us to start sailing. For six days I would stick with one place. Day trips from STT to St. John, Jost and Tortola are easy and Virgin Gorda is possible. Ferries, excepting St. John, will add up.

For Scrub, you will spend a lit of time getting to the ferries.
