Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/07/2017 02:20 AM

Unable to get any info from my friends and neighbours. If anyone knows how Apple Bay fared I would love to hear it..and, if someone could at least eyeball my house , CRC,and tell me if its still there, has its roof etc I would be eternally grateful and buy you dinner when we (hopefully) get back in three weeks..

There was a FB post of Carrot Bay under water. So sad Mal. I hope CRC was spared.

Sending prayers to everyone down in the BVIs. The initial posting on facebook are not good. I'm sure we will get more reliable info in the new few days.
Take care,
Mike

Also concerned about Uschi and Jessica as they live at Coconut Point.

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/07/2017 03:44 PM

No word yet that I am aware of and I'm really worried. There are many folks across the island who are not responding and I pray it's because they have no means of communication right now.

Unfortunately, this is only a joke. There's nothing left of Bomba's... there's nothing left of the road behind Bomba's, save a little bit of debris. The entire area is washed out.

Got it..thanks..if it shows what I think it shows it looks like CRC is at least still there with a blotch of colour that could be the roof..How did Uschi's place at Coconut Point do?

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/07/2017 05:54 PM

Has anyone heard anything about West End/Soper's? I haven't seen any posts or photos. Just sickened about the damage to such a special place and hoping that the wonderful people of the BVI are safe. Sending prayers for strength during what will surely be a long and difficult recovery.

I am curious about West end too

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/07/2017 09:18 PM

I just saw a post where they said Soper's Hole was destroyed. Yacht on top of a building and Pusser's is gone. Jost Van Dyke is supposedly completely wiped out and they are trying to save people by boats. I don't know if any of this is true but I imagine it is.

That makes me feel a little better..if someone would just walk up the road and tell me CRC is standing with its roof I'd feel even better..Good to see so many roofs still on house including Tortola House which is on the hill above us..thanks

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/08/2017 03:38 AM

That the North Shore road is gone is terrible; means of transportation will be limited to boat.

Malcolm, this isn't very clear, but I see roofs...

One of our local Atlanta news stations broadcast this story of two Atlantans staying at Sebastian's Villas with their footage of Irma hitting Apple Bay!

I'm betting that Fortress CRC will be found in good shape. I remember when you added the second floor. It certainly looked like it could take a hard hit.

Spirits up Mal

Bumping this up..we have heard nothing from Little Apple.Would love to hear our neighbours and friends are OK and the status of our home. We are so lucky to have great friends ready to come down and help us and everyone else but need to know if CRC is close to habitable in an inside camping sort of way!!

I know the feeling Malcom..have had 3 friends volunteer to help fix condo at Olde Yard on Virgin Gorda but don't have a clue what's needed but most of all don't know about the great crew there at olde yard and at cafe and Debbie, who runs the beauty shop who looks after our place and acts as concierge for our friends and trouble shooter for the Subaru. Found out our friends Simon and Heather wood on Tortola made it through..still waiting for word on Rudy Woodly on VG.

Finally saw a pic that makes it look like we lost the roof over the third floor balcony and the back edge of the roof..no idea on the other side. It looks like Ramar's house on the cliff is history..would love some more info from anyone ..thanks..

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/09/2017 10:19 PM

From what I have heard...trying to reach news about Long Bay. People there are "isolated" and can't be reached because there is a good portion of a house on the road in Apple bay. Also the road to Zion Hill is full of trees and noone is able to pass. We have heard that the people on Long Bay so far are okay.

My friend went to my house up the hill at Long Bay Estates.
The road is passable from Carrot Bay to Long Bay and to Road Town. The road up the hill at L.B. is not she walked to my house at least 1/2 mile up hill. If you are in town she said she gets cell reception. They cleared the road at Sebastians of the restaurant .

Mal, we rented Mi Casita from Penny Johnson for 10/28. If you have any news from her when you get on island please let me know. We are trying to figure out if we want to cancel our flights. She is located above Fort Recovery. If there's any way she can still host us we will be there with gloves and supplies to help the recovery.

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/11/2017 11:09 PM

Heard from Jim Kelley..he is alive and well as is our cat Farkle. The report on CRC is not good..but could be worse. He says the structure is standing as is most of the roof..The inside is a complete loss. He says the sea wall is gone and our ground floor is inaccessable down the stairs. When I first read it I thought he meant our concrete stairs were gone but now I'm thinking the area behind the wall has washed away..praying our foundations and septic are OK..more when I know it. Does anyone know if the ferries are running or when they will be..if they are left????

so great he and Farkle are OK!! but so, so sorry to you both about the damage. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif" alt="" />

Sorry to hear of your damage.

I heard a ferry from Tortola tried to go to to St Thomas today, but it was turned away.

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/12/2017 01:50 AM

Great news on Jim and Farkle! The rest can be rebuilt!! Saw the remains of what is now TS Irma as I was driving through Lower Alabama today - flipped her the bird for you all!! Or y'all as I should be saying now!!

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/12/2017 06:57 AM

So sorry to hear that Mal. I'm sure you and Candace must feel terrible. Hope you can get everything back together again. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif" alt="" />

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/12/2017 03:42 PM

Really sorry to hear Mal. Hopefully you can get down there on your planned schedule and see what needs to be done and start the process. The million dollar view will return quickly and I'm sure CRC will be better than ever. All the best!!

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/13/2017 11:16 PM

I am throwing this out there with the understanding that others need help more than we do. From what we can see and hear the sea wall in front of CRC and maybe down to the east collapsed. Now CRC and the others all look like they weathered the storm upright but I am worried about the danger from high tides and surf that will come. I am trying to get someone to build the wall back ASAP before there is any more damage..looking for any help I can get on this. I fear if we wade through all the insurance red tape it my be too late so I am ready to get this fixed with my own $$ and worry about that later..BTW..it looks like segments of the wall are on the beach and could possible be used again..

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/14/2017 01:36 AM

Mal, Good call to get it done. My concern across the territory is who is going to do all the work. With the work permit process and lack of housing who can you call?? If it was up to TTOL a truck load of red stripe and we could get volunteers to each check a bag of cement and build it for you,but not possible with current red tape.

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/14/2017 02:10 AM

Is it even feasible that anyone from government with a clipboard is driving around "catching " people rebuilding their houses? Or is it more the case of trying to bring in the materials??

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/14/2017 03:31 AM

Mal, there has to be someone in the area who need the money. Any kind if re-inforcement at this point would be helpful. Post on BVI Abroad FB page for help wanted and see who responds.

I have been in touch with Cheryl Sebastian with Purple Pineapple. She is now in St Croix and they are trying to raise funds for a generator. If anyone wants to inbox me for the information, I'll gladly pass it along.

Re: Apple Bay, Tortola - 09/14/2017 03:33 PM

Mal, hoping you get help on the sea wall asap. We have feet on the ground at Sandy Ground Estates on Jost and the story is very similar.

Waiting to hear that those with American Passports can enter the BVI to access the properties and assess the damages. Trying to get photos taken, but communication to/from Jost is pretty much non exsistant and the need for the photos is so so secondary to the humanitarian efforts that will/should/must come first!!!
