Virgin Gorda Questions - 06/22/2018 03:58 PM

Hi! My husband and I are thinking of making a trip to Virgin Gorda this July. This is our first trip to the BVI. We usually visit SXM or Mexico. We are looking at a place on Spring Bay to stay. Since it’s July we are wondering if there is a cool breeze on that Bay or if it will be really hot? And if the mosquitos are bad that time of year also? Also I know sargassum is bad in some areas, does anyone know if this Bay suffers with this problem?

We will also be interested in a day tour to Jost Van Dyke if anyone has recommendations of a company we could contact.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Check out Guavaberry Spring Bay. They are getting back together and can help you find what you need. The sargassum is not on the Sir Francis Drake Channel side on Virgin Gorda, but is on a few places on the Atlantic side, which you won't go to anyway. Spring Bay is our go to place. It is a short walk from the Baths and connects to other beaches such as Little Trunk and Valley Trunk. We were down for three weeks in May and had no mosquitos and a nice breeze. Enjoy!

HI Islalover - as Charlie said the sargasum is on the Atlantic side - mostly in handsome bay so Olde Yard Village gets the smell - Guavaberry is rebuiding rapidly and I am sure they have some cottages available but if not we are offering discounts on Adagiovilla see www.adagiovilla.com cheers Brian

Hi Charlie! Thanks for the information. We have booked with Guavaberry!!! Can you tell me if we can walk to Top of the Baths from there or any other bars or restaurants?

And Brian - your place looks amazing thanks for your help!

It's about a 5 minute walk to the Top of the Baths from Guavaberry. All other restaurants would require a taxi or vehicle rental. Please note that Guavaberry has a commissary well stocked with all kinds of grocery items, liquor and beer for eating in your cottage or villa. All have full kitchens. Have fun!

Like Kmon said, Top of the Baths is just right up the road. It is a good mile or more to get to de Island Pot, though, and then on down to CocoMaya. Guavaberry has a discount car rental with Mahaghony (sp), so you can go exploring Spanish Town, up the hill and over to Savannah Bay, Mahoe, Mt. Trunk, etc. Getting around is easy and you can't get lost. I know, because I tried and always came out on one of the two main roads...lol Both restaurants at Leverick Bay are open. There are grocery stores on island, such as Bucks, Rosys, Roadtown Wholesale, and others. VG is our go to place. Love it, and so will you. Oh, don't forget the sunscreen. Enjoy!

Sitting on the porch at Guavaberry as we speak
If you could sum it up in a word it would be “Quiet”
There are 5 cottages available and only 2 are booked
at this time
We are staying at the very end of the property and
walked down to the beach yesterday and never saw
another person
We’re the only ones on the beach pretty much all day
The bugs are more a function of rainfall than season
Rained on and off for 3 days so the bugs are out
No sargassum on the channel side
The damage from the storm is evident but after a
couple of days you start to notice the progress more
than the debris
Reconstruction is going at a feverish pace
Temperatures don’t seem much different than April
(Our usual time to visit)

We were the first there when Guavaberry reopened in February. The ongoing construction was amazing, and we had the beach mostly to ourselves each day. I’ve never been in the summer, but love ❤️ that place so much! Hope the tree on the beach is making progress in its recovery! Enjoy!

Hiya .. you will love Guavaberry and they have just build new villas so it will be fabulous. No sargassum seaweed at that side of the Island .. so all good there. you will have a magical time. We go there all the time .. for boat trips we always use Bradley Powerboats at Leverick Bay, they offer join in charters where you go with other people for a fun filled day out, and small personalized groups. They also do private charters and boat rentals, we also rent a dinghy from them and explore the North Sound with a picnic which is amazing. Call Elaine there she is amazing and will make sure you have a magical day. Enjoy :-)

I appreciate all of the great information. Would love to hear about your favorite restaurants for dinner. We are looking at Mermaid, Leverick Bay and Coco Maya. Any other suggestions?

I don't think Mermaid is open yet - they are rebuilding but you have to try Hog Heaven, Top of the baths, chez bamboo, old yard village - (you need to take a taxi to Hog Heaven if you are staying at Guavaberry) all good for dinner cheers Brian

If you are staying at Guavaberry, Tina will have the most recent updates posted in the office. There really are quite a few open now. Mermaids is open, but not in previous location. We never did "find" them at their new location. We were down first week in April and had no problems eating. Definitely get to Hog Heaven either for lunch or dinner. We had an excellent dinner at Old Yard Village and I believe they have reopened the swimming pool. It was drained while we were there and they were making repairs to it. Trees had blown/fallen into the water and discolored it badly. Top of the Baths is only open for lunch, and open for Sunday Breakfast as well.

Mermaids is open in the building previously occupied by Grandma's Kitchen.
