Provisioning on Anegada

Provisioning on Anegada - 11/28/2018 08:22 PM

We’ll be land based on Anegada for 5 nights in late February 2019. I vaguely remember a small grocery store near the ferry dock - is it still there? Well stocked? We’re goimg to be eating dinners out (hello Wonky Dog!) but would like to pick up some simple things for breakfast, snacks and maybe an easy lunch or two. And liquor of course. Better to shop for liquor on Anegada or at the STT airport? We’re flying VI Airlink from STT to anegada.
Thanks!

There is a store in the old Purple Turtle spot. I think it's reasonable stocked for what you're looking for but I haven't seen it for myself.

One thought for you. Before I moved to Tortola, I was spending 3 or 4 trips a year on Anegada for 2+ weeks at a time. We always provisioned thru Bobby's just like the charter boats do. I'd email their spreadsheet a week before my trip and instead of delivering to charter base, I'd ask them to deliver to the Anegada ferry. We would just go to the dock and meet the ferry when it arrived on Anegada. I also flew from STT or SJU so I would have everything delivered by Bobby's; liquor, water, food, etc.

Jason, interesting idea! I’ll check the ferry schedule to see when they run to anegada. Assume I should be checking Tortola to anegada correct?

Yes. There are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday boats. One tip, if you can schedule on the afternoon boat it's better. I find that the provisions that go on the morning boat are packed the night before and put into the walk-in. Sometimes this leads to frozen fresh goods...

It's as simple as telling Bobby's or Riteway; deliver to the Anegada Monday afternoon ferry. Sometimes I have to pay a per box fee to the ferry and sometimes I don't.

The pickup at the ferry is a cultural event on the island and always entertaining!

Julie, just back from a week on Anegada. Jason is correct that Bobby's or Riteway will offer more. But for what little we needed (beer, liquor, sodas, breakfast items and snacks) we found Lil Bits near the dock to have a decent selection. Sure the prices are a bit higher and the selection is slim. But it was enough for what we needed. As you, we ate dinner out every night. In our opinion Wonky Dog is very good. But the best lobster was at Potters and Anegada Reef Hotel. Say hi to Ann and Andrew at Cow Wreck! Have a great time.

Also, if there is something specific you need, ask. They have deliveries brought in through the week.

Great info Jason - thank you!
Bill, this is good to know. Not worried about the prices being higher - it's to be expected given the remoteness of the island. :-) More wondering about selection - finding our favorite vodka (Tito's) and rums (Kracken, Capt Morgan Black) seem harder to find.

I've heard rumor of amazing cinnamon rolls on the islands - any info on that?

Those are at Pam's Bakery which is part of Neptune's Treasure. You'll see the sign between the round about and the turn to Cow Wreck.

We found that the grocery store in the old purple turtle had the best selection of groceries. Between them, Lil Bits and the Anegada Reef Hotel store you should be able to find everything you need. You can also order online from Bobbies or Riteway and have food delivered on the afternoon ferry. We also had a great meal at the Lobster Pot and for lunch I love the lobster BLT at the Beach Club. Pam's bakery has wonderful breads, fresh hot pizza, and key lime pie. We spend 2 1/2 weeks on Anegeda and have never starved or gone thirsty. One word of caution do not buy your liquor in STT. If they find it they charge a duty. We have never had our luggage checked at the airport but others have. Enjoy your time and maybe we shall see you. We will be there End of Feb through Beginning of March flying from STT on Vi airlink too.
