Anyone know if they are still refunding miles for cancelled trips? Just wondering if we decide that our June trip is not worth the hassle of all the loops we have to jump through, if they would refund our miles to be used for a future trip. I can always email them, but thought someone here might know.

Yes they are now and always in the past. Have done it many times for various trips. Sometimes I'll book in miles then a great fare pops up and decide to buy instead of using miles. They also refund all fees too.

Scubaman--as far as refunding FEES to re-deposit miles, their policy has always been that it costs like $100 to re-deposit miles. I haven't tried to re-deposit miles since Covid, but pre-Covid, they were enforcing the fee to re-deposit miles, to ME. Now, you are a lot higher tier with AA than we are, so perhaps you weren't charged, but we were.. You could change DATES without a fee, but not re-deposit miles.

We had two different trips for this last summer all booked with miles and all fees were refunded and miles put back in account. Year before Covid we cancelled a miles trip to Texas and was fully reimbursed for miles and fees. Guess I'm lucky.

Like I said, you are a much higher tier than I am. Now, with Covid, I 'assume' that they are letting people re-deposit miles with no fee. Our trip last June was a paid trip and we got our money back from that one without any problem, especially because AA wasn't even flying to SXM at the time.

I don't have any higher tier than any other average AA miles member. Not MVP or VIP. Just an account with miles in it accumulated over years with my CC and some bought trips.

Appreciate the replies....thank you.

Our June 2020 trip miles and fees were refunded fully as well. Sure hope things ease up a little in the coming months. As of now, I'm not even considering booking our lodging until we have a better idea what travel restrictions will be in June. Such a PITA....but I certainly understand why the restrictions are in place.

I booked my trip this year with AA miles and have changed it 3 times. Each time, the miles were immediately refunded at no cost. The fees were automatically refunded within a few days. I did have to request refunds for the seat upgrades and each was processed in about 24 hours with a credit to my credit card.

I seem to recall AA announcing a change in their redepositing miles rules, imposing a monetary fee to do so, but I’m thinking this may have been before Irma happened and when that happened, everything changed. There were no questions asked and no monies charged to redeposit, which was a reasonable approach on their part and I think it’s been that way ever since.

It may also be a matter of why you’re canceling or if they’re the ones doing the cancelling of trips. We had FF tix last Nov. but had paid for up-graded seats and when AA cancelled those flights we were refunded every mile and every dollar spent.

Respectfully,

pat

this is copied from AA website:

We’re committed to offering flexibility when your plans change. Earlier this fall, we eliminated change fees on award travel within the U.S. and between the U.S. and several international destinations. Effective immediately, we’re eliminating award travel change fees to all remaining destinations. We’re also eliminating award reinstatement fees.

If your travel plans change, you can contact Reservations to change your flight award. There is no fee to make a change. Keep in mind, you still need to redeem miles for any award price difference when making a change.
