Ellen, ironically after my guess I saw your picture on Smithsonian Channel Aerial America featuring Ohio. OK, what is the name of this place? Be specific.

Mike, most confusing to me - looks like a place protected by barrier islands hence relatively flat. I don't see any tropical vegetation like palms and the land rises sharply so I eliminated certain familiar places.. Just for fun, I'll guess somewhere in the Indian Ocean?

It's a difficult one this. Don't have any photos that will make identification easier so it'll just have to be a case of homing in on the answer. Not the Indian Ocean but you are in the correct hemisphere Fred.
Nearer to Sydney than the Northern Territory. Wasn't actually that warm as it was winter. There is something unusual about the sand on this island. Can you work out what it is...
Adrian... It is Silica Sand. Absolutely amazing because it doesn't stick to you and it squeaks just like the best powder snow when you walk on it. This photo is the island next to the original photo. It shares its name with one of the American Founding Fathers mentioned in one of the recent photo competitions...
That's it Fred. The island in the original photo Is Whitsunday and the beach Whitehaven Beach ( https://www.queensland.com/gb/en/th...c07b935fbe730dc52c-whitehaven-beach.html ). You may remember that Jean and I don't really like beaches (much to Malcolm's disgust) except when viewing them from the cockpit of an anchored boat but Whitehaven is different. The sand is incredible in that it doesn't stick to you and also doesn't get hot. Much more comfortable. than your average beach! Your go.
Mike, I forgot about beaches, but I do recall your disdain for kitty cats. Regarding your picture, I kept going through the alphabet and only after I looked it up I would have guessed Mackay. However, your clue led me to Hamilton. OK, here's one for now with a more revealing one later if needed.

Beerman, I was looking for the name of the NP, but El Capitan could be in the picture so I'm giving you credit. My next one would have surely been a giveaway for Yosemite NP. Beerman, you are up.

Interesting - I thought of "El Capitan" and googled it, but none of the images matched, although the rock formations looked similar. I should have thrown out that guess after all That is one National Park that I need to put onto my bucket list.

Those ant mounds are impressive (there are actually "air conditioning ants" that open and close the vents in there!) so we must be in Australia, but I can't narrow it down further yet.

I'm trying to remember which museum had a large termite nest that one could walk through and see how it functions as a complex system. It was very impressive - I think it might have been Sheffield, but perhaps the natural history museum in London. Wherever it was, it was very impressive. Since the area looks dry, I am going to narrow the guess down to the eastern half of Oz.

The next pic is of my nav station. I was just about to leave the east coast as shown on the laptop heading for the next destination where the first photo was taken. You'll need to zoom in to see the detail. The hitchhiker didn't fancy the 800 miles west so stayed with us for a while. The big mono in the photo is friends aboard a early 80s 76ft Swan...
No idea where it is, but I like your dual headsail rig.
Dan
It worked very well Dan. The wide beam of the cat meant I didn't need to use a pole to keep the two genoas filled all the way round to about 140 deg off the wind. Used that for the vast majority of a circumnavigation.
I thought Fran might have got the answer to this as he gave this location as the answer to my previous post
Knew I'd miss one. Couldn't believe there were so many occurrences of the name! The original photo is Fanny Bay which is where all boats arriving in Darwin have to be quarantined (long before Covid). They came with divers to inspect the hull and then injected stuff UP the thru hulls to kill anything living there. Nice bay but not somewhere you want to go paddling in the water as they remove about 200 Salt Water Crocodiles every year which then gradually work there way back again..
Darwin was a really nice surprise. Arrived not expecting much but really liked the place. Then of course the Outback starts at the edge of town with some amazing sights. Really nice.
Love your info Mike, also loved your boat when we chartered her. Sure miss old Bill H.
Didn't know you'd been on Jeannius Fran! Bill was great wasn't he. Sadly quite a few people I've met through TTOL are now gone... BillH, Di, Saildoggie, BigJim, Bluebayou, Daix and now of course Nick. There may be others I don't know about as well. That's quite a toll.
I knew about some of those folks, but not all - time flies - especially the older we get.
Back to this fun game. Mike, you didn't miss any names, but you needed 2 coats of paint on some of the names . Here is one I dug up and the town name please.

Well I recognise the boat so I should recognise the location but it doesn't immediately come to mind. The shroud protection didn't last long and I didn't replace it so it is a pretty old photo. Definitely the Caribbean!
Yeah Mike, We were on her with Bill & Di, also MAP, great time. Still have one of the custom tee shirts we had made for that trip. Nice photo of Jeannius on the front of them. Ahh the good old days.

That'll have been March 2007 and the Cricket World Cup I think. Several years later than I thought. I do remember that being a tough old passage!
I had tickets for the World Cricket Cup in Antigua, then my rudder broke off while at sea in the BVI heading to St. Martin. Not my favorite sailing moment...

Dis you have to turn round or did you make it to St Martin?
Without a rudder (unlike with a jammed rudder) a sailboat is inherently unstable and unsteerable. After many hours of trying all the alternatives I could think of (heavy seas: balancing sails won't work without a rudder, motoring just goes sideways and then in circles even with trailing line, pushing/towing the boat with my 10HP dinghy in those seas didn't work) I drifted until the bottom was only 50 feet and dropped the hook and VHFd for a tow. It was an inauspicious day, as everyone with a boat was off looking for an infant that had gone overboard on a vessel that ran aground going between Fallen Jerusalem and the Baths. I waited 24 Hours and Speedy came by with his twin-engined "Unbelievable" fishing boat to tow into Spanis Town. Needless to say, anchoring in a full 6+ foot swell at sea, I was looking a bit green
p.s. I though of using one of my internal cabin doors as a makeshift tiller but in the end I negotiated a tow price that was less than the cost of replacing the internal door so I didn't try that. I had tried dragging weights and fenders on spare lines to get directional stability with no success as well.

It is indeed St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal. My family lived in a block of apartments just to the left (north) of the picture. I still recall looking in awe at ll those crutches mounted in the alcoves and the woods around Canada's largest church made for excellent playing grounds.

I've heard of this place and I know there is more than one but I've never seen them. One in Key West and at least one in Savannah. The seahorse doors make me think it's near the water and your clue about the highway makes me think of A1A or US1 so I'll go with Key West.

I saw those two cell towers and vegetation and thought of St. Martin, but I don't recognize those hotels/apartments. And the hills are too low for that to be Pic Paradis. The only other island that built up that comes to mind is St. Thomas, but I'd have to google to find out where. Perhaps Red Hook?

Wow - I didn't think I was going to guess it. I had thought of the resorts south of Red Hook, but google maps just told me it was north of Red Hook. But I'm not proud (quote stolen from "Alice's restaurant") and will take that as a correct guess.
Which city is this?

This is not in Holland. The first photo is the pedestrian zone of this over 800 year old city, the second is of the headquarters of an organization that every adult citizen of this country knows, and fears (and it's not the local equivalent of the IRS).

There looks to be an 'onion dome' in the background of the pedestrian photo, the original has flags (hard to see though) that could be Russian and those folks still fear the KGB so I'm going out on a limb and guess St. Petersburg.

This city is about 1400KM (870 miles for those still using the archaic imperial system) from St. Petersburg. "Fear" might have been an exaggeration regarding this government entity, "healthy respect" might be more appropriate.
There's a common saying and popular T-Shirt logo that says:
"<this city name> is just like a payback card. Collect enough points and you get a bicycle" (n.b. it loses a bit of poignancy in translation to English)

xrayman67 - you've got it. Was it Google or did you know which town it was?
While Flensburg is a pretty city, every driver in Germany knows of it because the central German authority for driving licenses resides there. The number of points on your license is stored there, hence everyone in Germany knows about "points in Flensburg". If you get too many, you lose your license and get to drive a bicycle

No, we are not in Asia but solidly in Africa. I spent some time working here and it is one of the places I would not revisit. One of the few times I was not armed while there I was ambushed, but fortunately their firearm either malfunctioned or ran out of ammunition (probably the latter, as it was an AK-47). While the country has gotten better in recent years, for the most part it makes the ghettos in US cities look safe in comparison.

Fred has it. The "Chinese Pavilion" (a beer garden) is in the middle of the Englischer Garten in Munich, Germany. The Park is bigger than Central Park in New York and is wonderful in summer and winter alike. The first picture is of an iconic tram/bus station next to the park called "Münchner Freiheit", and when I was working in Munich I lived in a flat just off the picture. This is in the middle of an area called "Schwabing" which is the part of town with all the live music, theatres and nightclubs so I loved living there!

Zanshin, I walked through this park about 30 years ago to get from my hotel to Schwabing. I recall asking the desk clerk if it was safe to walk there after dark and he looked at me like I was crazy - "of course it's safe to walk in the park anytime" he said. I couldn't remember the park's name, but something in the back of my mind told me there was an exotic structure there and hence my guess. Well, on with the show. I scrounged this picture up in my disorganized sd cards, but I won't have many follow-ups so here goes.
