Looking into maybe taking our first day trip to Saba when we arrive in April. Is it best to fly or take a ferry. Which side of the island do you leave from. Things to see and do when on Saba. Is it an expensive day trip? I did search for this topic, but couldn't find anything. Thanks

Larry,

Saba is an incredibly un-Caribbean Caribbean destination. It only took us about twenty years and thirty trips before we made our first trip over and a year or two later we did a stay-over because we so liked the laid-back atmosphere.

We took the Edge out of Simpson Bay the first time and we were fine with the trip. It was an average crossing and by that, I'd say that about twenty-five percent got sick, another twenty-five thought they would and the rest of us were okay. John and I sat outside and focused our sights on SXM and had no problems at all but many were not so lucky.

The next time we went we flew from PJIA and while white knuckled all the way over, in retrospect it was a pretty cool experience, particularly as we drew near and actually landed.

Saba is gorgeous. If you're a diver or a hiker you'll be in heaven. If neither, there's not much else but there is some drop dead gorgeous scenery to photograph.

First time over, we did a package tour on the Edge r/t, a bus tour w/lunch and a little shopping time, which is really all you need for Saba shopping. It's not an inexpensive day trip but it won't break the bank either. While we were taking the sightseeing tour, daughter and Granddaughter did some serious hiking up the steps......I think my granddaughter even made it to the top, or at least almost.

I don't think you'll be disappointed as long as you know it's NOT a beachy boozy island, though I guess it could be the latter if you want it to be. The Swinging Door Saloon was a great little spot for a libation or two.

Our trip included lunch on the patio of the Queens Garden Inn. It was that lunch in that spot that kept calling us back until we finally did our stay over there a few years later.

With your talent for writing, I sure do hope you go and then share your thoughts. To me, Saba was like stepping back to the days of our earliest trip to SXM but without the beaches.

We loved our day trip to SABA. Flew over from princess julliana. Very "unique" runway on SABA. Hike Mt. Scenery to the peak for an amazing view and have a wonderful lunch at the ecolodge off the trail.

For our second trip to sxm we planned a day trip, the options were Saba, St. Barths, and Anguilla. We opted for Saba and even after a tremendous amount of research we were still blown away by the views, the roads, the nature, and the people. I wouldn't mind going back and staying a few nights.....the best way I would describe the island is that it seems like a detox for ordinary life.

It truly is a special place to chill. Our stay-over was absolutely dream-like. We stayed three nights at Queens Garden Inn and we were in heaven. We had one of the suites with a hot (?) tub and absolutely adored our stay. You could read at night with the windows open with no bugs and one evening we walked to the top of the property and I needed a sweater. An incredible sojourn....and one very delightful island....

Thanks to all who gave us some options if we decide to go. Sand gravity is usually the only reason we never get to some of these other locales.
