Car rental agencies? - 10/12/2017 01:17 PM

I wonder what the status is of the car rental agencies? Bill and Elaine posted that a friend of theirs on island was unable to obtain a rental car. There have to be some cars available?

I emailed Alain from Triple A but did not hear back. We wanted to let him know we weren't coming and to ask how he was doing.

Yes, we would have been only 13 days away from a 2 week long vacation meeting up with friends we hadn't seen in a year and others who we luckily are able to see on a more regular basis. God willing there will be a visit for us next year.

This is what Lesley said to me a few weeks ago:

"a lot of the cars are damaged from flying debris . Have started working on them and have one missing , but it will be covered by the clients credit card. "

Just spoke with Anthea of Affordable Car Rentals, they are open for business, 721-523-2290. Affordable Car Rentals is located near the airport, I know that Patrick move most of his cars to high ground before the hurricane, some of the cars were damaged by the high winds.

Actually we just found it today on the French Port and in good condition but missing license plates.

Good news, Lesley, and glad you were able to locate it.

I can’t imagine what everyone is going through in trying to locate and establish ownership of missing goods, particularly cars, with so many having been totally destroyed. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

Re: Car rental agencies? - 10/16/2017 12:54 AM

I contacted Allain a few weeks ago via WhatsApp text message and told him I was planning on coming in January. He got back to me about a day later and said everyone was ok. I assume that included Myra. He said many of his cars were damaged but he had insurance and would be ready for us when we come. I was uncertain about my arrival due to flights etc and said I would be in touch. He said he would look forward to hearing from me.
If you haven’t heard from him perhaps a phone call would be the way to go.

Glad to hear that Alain is ok. Agreed, our dependence on email here in the states for everything doesn't work so well in SXM, especially these days. A phone call is often best.

I got a car from Empress for this week. I tried to call Unity but got no answer from 2 different phone numbers. Probably should have tried internet.

Re: Car rental agencies? - 10/18/2017 12:25 AM

Some of the phone numbers are down , hence the no connection.
Most of us are up and running .

According to my taxi driver friend and his brother (who owns a body shop), a great number of cars suffered some damage. He also told me driving can be pretty dangerous as people are driving cars without mirrors, lights, windows, etc. and it is making for unfavorable conditions.

WOW! Was yours in a garage or something?

I recall reading that someone had their villa heavily damaged, but the car was fine as it was in the cement bunker of a garage.
