Covid Positive Test While Traveling

Covid Positive Test While Traveling - 12/04/2021 12:34 PM

There have been several posts here with questions about what happens if you test positive while on the island. I don't have any answers myself, but there's a recent post on TripAdvisor from someone that is currently traveling and has tested positive. The post is asking about what is covered by the $125/day provided by the mandatory insurance in the event of a quarantine. There's not much more than this question yet, but the thread may be of interest if additional information is eventually shared.

Very few reported uses of the insurance but it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Thanks for posting. I find it surprising there have not been more positive tests and required usage of the mandatory insurance.

I have seen reports of a couple of cases like this. I would not depend for too much on the SXM insurance in this circumstance. The insurance that I paid for myself, for the last trip and our upcoming trip, is supposed to have some coverage for this type of situation, but the devil is in the details!!

Yup...that's the reason for that small investment in person travel medical insurance

Regardless of insurance, I’m curious about getting basic necessities. Who brings food, medicine, etc.?

With only 16 reported active cases on the Dutch side I wonder if this one is in the count.

I’m actually buying an additional Covid insurance policy here in Canada from Manulife insurance just in case of this scenario. I’d rather be over insured than under insured. I did a quote and it’s about $45 to $50 a person. Here’s what the policy covers.

COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan:
Available to Canadians travelling abroad
Provides emergency medical insurance for COVID-19 and related complications (up to $1,000,000 CAD per insured). Plus, if you have received the full course of immunization for COVID-19 that is authorized by Health Canada before your effective date, you are offered up to $5,000,000 CAD for expenses related to COVID-19
Provides Emergency Medical Insurance coverage for Non-COVID-19 related medical conditions (up to $5,000,000 CAD per insured)
Includes Trip Interruption Insurance benefits in the event of quarantine (up to $200 per insured person per day for your additional and unplanned commercial hotel and meal expenses to a maximum of $2,800 if you are unexpectedly required to self-isolate or quarantine. Family coverage maximum is $400 per insured family per day to a maximum of $5,600)

We’re looking at a policy through Travelex. It specifically mentions quarantine situations in regard to trip delay. Other options may cover it, but I feel better seeing it explicitly stated.

We’re covered through our credit card for trip cancellation due to illness, so this extra policy would just be for any expenses due to illness during the trip. As a result, it’s cheaper than including the cost of the trip.

When getting a quote, I’m putting in $1 for the trip cost, and it doesn’t seem to affect the coverage for what we’d need. The policy still offers up to $2,000 per person in trip delay ($250/day). It’s $94 total for three people for seven days.

What if only one tests positive, but all 3 have to stay? Seems they’d only cover the positive person.

Re: Covid Positive Test While Traveling - 12/04/2021 08:37 PM

The policies I’ve seen cover the sick person and any travel companions. In our case, we’re all in the same family. I’m not sure if that matters, though. Here’s what it says on the Travelex site:

“If you or a traveling companion contract coronavirus while traveling, and it is diagnosed by a physician, you could be eligible for trip interruption, trip delay, emergency medical and medical evacuation coverage.”

The mandatory island insurance does only cover the sick person, so it’s one more reason to get something additional.

Beachkitten--I don't think all three would even WANT to stay?? Why would they? I would think the others, with negative tests, would want to get their tushes back home, and not expose themselves further to a positive person??

Especially if they end up testing positive halfway through the infected ones quarantine. Then it starts all over again.

Every situation will be different, but some families may choose to stay together, especially if children or minors are the ones that test positive. In our case, if I tested positive and my wife and child didn’t, I’d encourage them to go ahead and leave. However, if our son tested positive, we’d likely both stay.

OK, yes, I didn't figure in a positive test for a minor. At that point someone would have to stay with them.

Oh, I would have NO problem staying! Lol

I’d quarantine hubby in the bedroom, and sleep in the other room. I could get groceries and make meals. He could even sit outside in the sun.

I guess it depends on the person's circumstances. We are both self-employed and our schedule is very much dictated by that. And I personally would be very concerned about catching it and not being able to get home myself.

That sounds like a very good insurance policy!

I posted this on the TripAdvisor thread, too, but I emailed Shop n Drop grocery delivery to see if they'd be able to deliver food in the event of a quarantine. Jeannie responded and said that this would be possible and deliveries could just be left at the door. So, if you have a kitchen and can't go shopping on your own, this seems like a great option if you're quarantined.

dvesc,

Her response only goes to further prove what I’ve said about her since I first started using her so many years ago when she originally opened her business. That young woman is amazing and always goes the extra mile for her clients.
