Sailing Croatia

Wanted to get some info on bareboating in Croatia. Anyone with experience? We are experienced sailors without a ton of bareboating experience and wanted to see if there were places in Croatia or the Med that were good for those of us without many bareboats under our belts.

Croatia is beautiful with wonderful sailing. We sailed with Navigare and the boat was well equipped and we had no problems. Provisioning was easy with good selections. One caveat was that the very first thing the charter office asked for when we checked in was my "license". I have IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) issued thru US Sailing. Lots of marinas and town quays for support if you need it. Watch out for buras in summer but generally very easy sailing. We had winds from 0 to 25 knots a year ago September. We were looking at June. Is this an OK idea for rookie bareboaters? Will have a good first mate (wife) but crew is totally inexperienced. IPC isn't a big deal. I have all the ASA courses so getting that is a matter of sending in the check.

June is a great time to go. Very crowded in July and August. There is lots of good information on these forums about bareboating in general - check it out. A thorough checkout list is a must. Make sure you go thru everything and ask questions. Provisioning can be an adventure for new bareboaters. The restaurants in Croatia are fabulous and part of the adventure is walking the town quay to town and checking out the restaurants. We provisioned mostly for breakfast and lunch.
If you and your wife are experienced you should be fine. The Med-moor can be intimidating if you haven't done it before, but our crew (3 experienced, 4 not so much) did fine. If you haven't bareboated before, I would stick with a well known company, ie. Moorings, Sunsail, Navigare to be sure there is a high level of support if you need it.

Just had some folks I know return from a charter in Croatia, they have been going every year. They were sad to report that prices have skyrocketed over the last year, 130 Euros for a slip, 40 Euros for a case of beer and so on.
They will not be returning, which is disappointing as I had hoped to charter with them there next year.

That is disappointing to hear. The ACI Marinas have always been expensive and charge in euro. But the Croatian currency is kuna, and like anywhere, groceries and, beer, etc cost more if you don't use the local currency. A quick check at Konzum (Croatian supermarket chain) has Heinekin for 19 kuna per liter, which is about $1 US.
Also, town quays are somewhat less expensive tha ACI and of course one can always toss out an anchor.

We sailed in Croatia 2 years ago, but with a captain (we're experienced, but didn't get it together to get the license). If you're interested, I wrote up the trip on my blog: Here, here , and here. It was an awesome trip, offering the feeling of getting in on something before everyone else did (which was, of course, not really true in comparison to other Europeans knowing the "secret" long before those of us from the U.S.); sounds like the rest of us are catching on.
