NEW RULES--for the time being, ANYONE can answer to name the picture, and IF you don't have a picture of your own to post, with that person's permission you can name someone else to post a new picture for you. I don't think that's a regular occurrence. We also saw this on the same day as we were leaving. The Cape Cod Ferry on the rocks.. It went past us at high speed and 30 minutes later we arrived at the scene...

Well I think it is Turkey. It looks very like a place called Ova Buka where I spent three days on my very first charter ( a flotilla ) waiting for Sunsail to change the engine on my boat which had consumed all it's oil in the first 10 nm trip. Wasn't a great start having to get towed in with a reluctant wife and very young daughter as my crew.

Can't remember the name of the island but the main town is Mandraki its next to Kos & Rhodes

Not sure of the name of the town but the Island is called Nisyros ..we left Kos for a two week flotilla around the Dodecanese area of the Greek isles.

This stop was incredible and we even walked on the floor of this dormant volcano ...the tiny dot in the middle is my husband

Hi. Neat pictures. I have no guesses even, though. Generally when someone posts a pic and no one has a guess, the original poster gives a clue or two, to help out the people trying to guess. Clues do NOT have to be pictures.

I would guess the Azores, but not sure which Island.
I have only been to Terceira and I do not think it is that one.

What appears to be missing are the names (and perhaps bodies) on the graves. I'm guessing that it might be Israel and perhaps something to do with the Holocaust?

And I was going to guess Gallipoli but that is not in North Africa. The only applicable site that I can think of is the battle (cemetery) of Alamein. That was the site of two battles where there were many casualties.

It may have been the battled that changed the war.
The cemetery is in the desert not far from the sea - just miles and miles of nothing - heat sand and more sand
Tank crews are buried together with three headstones to mark their resting place
And the amount of unknown graves is overwhelming

There is a very good museum close by.
The desert that surrounds the area still has lots of unexploded ordinance and after a wind storm vehicles and tanks are still be found.
In 2008 they found a truck that was in the desert and it started and they drove it to the museum... crazy.

Mike, I haven't been there myself but have talked to people who have. The place sounds like a great place to visit for a number of reasons but especially the people. I think this next picture will be easy (even if you haven't been there).

Fran, good catch on the clues, but this is a long, long way from Alaska. Carol was much closer although not right next door.

I've seen two beautiful places with ugly oil tanks like that. I think it is either St Croix or Statia. It's my bedtime now so, if I'm right, someone else post a photo.

There are two official languages, but it doesn't really matter as the island has been uninhabited since the lighthouse keeper was retired in 1948.

I believe that I recognize the rock (off Moskito Island, marks the outside of the North Sound entrance). The only uninhabited island that I can think of with a lighthouse is Sombrero Island. I've sailed past her twice - the first land you see when heading to St. Martin from Virginia. But I never went close to shore.

Addendum:
I Just looked at the first picture and saw houses in the distance. So my guess can't be correct... oh well...

With the two languages clue and uninhabited I'm guessing it is one of the small islands between St Martin and St Barts. Ile Forchue is the only one I can think of that has an anchorage but I would have thought that was part of St Barts so only one official language.

The north shore of this island has a very large tidal pool that rivals Jost Van Dyke's bubbly pool.

When approaching from the south, watch out for reefs that extend over 2.5 miles from shore.

Is it Culebrita?

BINGO!

It's Culebrita in the Spanish Virgin Islands (formerly known as the Passage Islands) and is part of Puerto Rico. It's only a 2.5 hour downwind sail from Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas. If you avoid the weekends when the local boaters show up (and even then it tends to be very family friendly with multiple generations onboard the boats), you will usually have the island pretty much to yourself. The main anchorage is Bahia de Tortuga (Turtle Bay) - you can expect to count a dozen or more sea turtles rising near you boat. We've experienced some amazing full moons here. Only challenge is that this bay is exposed to northerly ground swells.

From Bahia de Tortuga, it's a relatively easy 20 minute hike to the lighthouse that was built by the Spanish from 1882-1886. It was destroyed in 1932 by a hurricane, rebuilt, then extinguished during much of WWII for security measures, returned to service in 1944, automated in 1948, then the building was finally closed in 1959. There has been some attempt to stabilize the crumbling lighthouse walls, but be cautious if you explore the rooms. The spiral iron staircase looks ready to collapse. I haven't tried to climb up the steps since Hurricane Irma.

The nearby populated island of Culebra has several very good restaurants in the small town of Dewey. There is a Spanish Puerto Rican vibe to the island that is completely different from the nearby USVI and BVI. I've found the residents to be extremely friendly.

After being spectacularly useless at limiting infections, our government seems to have got it right and pre-ordered a large number of different vaccines before knowing what, if anything, would work. So far they've got 3 right, Pfizer, Moderna and Oxford and are now rapidly working through the priority groups with 432,000 administered on Friday. I'm in the fifth group, over 65 and Jean is two groups down. At 400,000 plus a day, all priority groups (50 and over and people with underlying health issues) should have had one jab within the next two to three months.

Indonesia is part of Asia because it lies on the same continental shelf as mainland Asia. In just the same way, the British Isles are part of continental Europe because they lie on the same continental shelf. We are an island now but as recently as 9,000 years ago (just after the last ice age) you could walk from England to France. Melting ice, a landslide in Norway and the resulting Tsunami flooded what is now the English Channel and that was that, Britain became an island.
