Fishing Guestions - 03/26/2015 09:19 PM

I enjoy fishing off of the back of the boat with an ultra light while moored. I used frozen squid last trip and had pretty good results. I got the squid at Richardson's in Tortola but used it up in a couple of days. Is there anyplace at the North Sound that sells squid? What other types of bait will work? I was thinking of some of the Gulp products but not sure if I'll be wasting my time. It will be me and two grandkids fishing one is 8 the other is 10. We just fish for fun and release what we catch. Last trip we had the best luck fishing at Anagada and Cooper Island. Looking for some tips or pointers.

We used some minnow rubber flies from Orvis and caught some different fish. I would love anyone's input on how to catch the multiple 4 and 5' tarpon under the boat. I tried every tarpon fly I had.

All of the years I've been in the ilons....I've not fished. However, I have been saltwater fishing since 1975 and when I stumbled upon the Gulp products it was INCREDIBLE!!! Highly recommend the pumpkin seed color Gulp Swimming Mullet and the "peeler Crab" I have been on MANY fishing charters with guys and the guide bring the typical shrimp and such and that is great. But, one time a guide totally messed up and all of the bait died in the "live-well" (not so "live"...and not so "well") The guys were using the dead bait and catching nothing but catfish and I switched to Gulp pumpkin seed mullets that I brought and blew them away......I was bringing in trout, reds, and other species. We wound up going through an entire small plastic pail of the pumpkin seed mullets. Since a lot of saltwater fish like flashy bling type stuff, some nice spoons will likely work as well. I've had good luck with the red/white Dardevle Spoons (that is spelled correctly)

I found squid at the grocery store overlooking the soanishtown harbor. I also was able to catch some small baitfish using a small twitch bait and then used them for cut bait. Wish I had a shot at the tarpon. Wasn't in a place to see them (next time). Would be fun to try.

Next time you have tarpon around the boat put a long line on the dinghy and let it drift back about 50 feet. Get in the dinghy and cast back to the boat with your favorite lure. Don't know why this works but it does!

They seem to sell squid in most stores, I've found it in Riteway, Bobby's, the little grocery on VG near the car rental place, etc. It's frozen box-o-squid and makes great bate.

I've had some success casting a Rapala Storm Swim Shad (3"). No tarpons, just snappers and one small barracuda.
