Leverick marina vs Scrub Island marina - 08/23/2017 12:21 PM

Scrub is more expensive but the slide and pool look nicer. Any thoughts?

Tough topic. Kinda like Sailboats vs. Powerboats. IMHO Scrub is like power boats, Leverick is like sailboats.

I like 'em both for different reasons.
Leverick has Nick and Monica, just sayin'. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/dine.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Thumbsup.gif" alt="" />

Leverick gives you access to Virgin Gorda if you want to rent a car and play tourist for a day. Scrub has a shuttle that goes to Trellis Bay.

I agree with other posting, there are different reasons to like each. Not quite like the Rolling Stones vs Beatles debate..more like Sgt Pepper vs Revolver.... <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Groovin.gif" alt="" />

There's a reason I've been to Leverick on all six of my BVI charters... And there's a reason I've been to Scrub on only one of those six charters. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Cheers.gif" alt="" />

We like both for different reasons. Leverick is the best deal you can get, plus you've got Nick and Monica. And it is a great place to see Virgin Gorda. So I think there's a lot more to do at Leverick.

Scrub - has an awesome pool. Especially for us having a 2.5 year old who loves to swim and loves the water slide. Next visit I'm sure he'll be on the slide on his own over and over! I will add, that if it wasn't for our son, Scrub would be at best, an occasional visit where Leverick a stop we make every time, almost always for at least 2 nights, often more.

If you want to feel like you are docking at a Marriott/Hilton in the U.S. go to Scrub. If you want to feel like you are docking in the Caribbean, go to Leverick.

You can tell the difference as soon as you pull up. Scrub comes complete with a 10 minute set of directions over the radio about where and how to set your lines. Leverick gives a cheery response on the radio with your dock assignment and a helping hand to grab lines and help you into your slip. Scrub check-in includes waiting in an Air Conditioned hotel lobby while people scurry around to get other guests drinks, spa appointments, and time-share sales times arranged. Leverick lets you know to stop by the end of the dock for your free ice and settle your bill sometime before you leave.

Re: Leverick marina vs Scrub Island marina - 08/23/2017 04:13 PM

Leverick for all of the reasons listed above...not the least of which is Nick and Monica. I suggest spending two days there -- rent a car and drive around the island -- this will also give you the freedom to visit the Baths when the entire cruise population has left for the day. You can stop up at Hog Heaven for the unparalleled view of North Sound. If you don't mind getting a little wet, you can take a day to do a "dinghy pub crawl" around North Sound. You could also just move the boat over to a ball at Saba, Bitter End, or anchor near Biras and use your dinghy to visit some of the other NS locations. It's also a pretty straight shot out to Anegada when you leave.

We aren't big Scrub fans - as stated above, too much like a typical U.S. resort and we see enough of that here. I guess a pool slide would be fun for the kiddos if you have them.

Re: Leverick marina vs Scrub Island marina - 08/23/2017 05:28 PM

We always go to both on every charter.

We love the view from the infinity pool at Scrub and having dinner and drinks at the inside bar while watching the sunset down the Sir Francis Drake Channel. We also find the staff pleasant and a few of them usually remember us from previous visits which is nice. For us personally, it is a nice mid-charter break from the sand, wind and salt. As stated though, if you don't like typical American resorts you probably won't love the atmosphere are Scrub. It is a bit more laid back than your typical resort IMO - just not your typical Caribbean vibe.

Leverick is great for many reasons as well. From the friendly and familiar staff to the accessibility it offers to Virgin Gorda, not to mention generally more reasonable pricing than Scrub. Their pool is just as refreshing (though it doesn't have the view or slide), the food in the upstairs restaurant at Leverick is every bit as good as Cavalara at Scrub, the downstairs restaurant very good as well with much affordable fare, a good store for provisioning, laundry machines if you run out of clean clothes, etc... The one thing it "lacks" is an overly resorty atmosphere.

What I love about all these this vs that threads is that it is all different degrees of GOOD <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif" alt="" />

No wrong choices - just better ones!! Why cant all decisions in life be like that...long live TTOL

The downside of Leverick is wall to wall concrete with very little shade or greenery. Hopefully the new addition will address the parking lot desert like feel.

Re: Leverick marina vs Scrub Island marina - 08/23/2017 08:05 PM

Depends a little on crew ages, how much time you plan to spend ashore, and the weather. Our crew of 11, including 4 kids ages 8-14, were at Leverick (Friday night Jumbies) and Scrub in June, in that order, although not back-to-back. When the weather turned a little cool and overcast after our first night at Scrub, we opted to stay a second night. The two Scrub pools, waterslide, trampoline and (rental) Hobie Waves and SUPs kept the kids well occupied for many hours, while some of the adults snorkeled Diamond Reef a quarter mile away by dinghy or took the free ferry to Marina Cay and Trellis Bay. But, we have also toured VG by truck in the past, another way to fill up a day. We like both, and will return to each again.

Re: Leverick marina vs Scrub Island marina - 08/23/2017 10:04 PM

Leverick would be my choice as an always stop.
Scrub pool/poolbar is nice. Restaurant was good. Dock check in was poor and did not honor the advertised rate even when I showed them the ad. Eventually got credit after several emails (the principle of not honoring the advertised TTOL discount irritated me, especially when I found out it had happened to many.)

Nick, on the other hand, has always gone above and beyond... Once no one came for mooring ball fee and we had to leave early(before dock opened, emailed Nick asking for address and he graciously said the night was "on the house"... The principle behind his being so gracious gets me back to Leverick every trip for at least 1 night, and frequently 2 nights.

Re: Leverick marina vs Scrub Island marina - 08/23/2017 11:34 PM

I had a fairly large audience when trying to slip my 14.2Beam yacht into a 14.8 foot wide slip at Scrub...the rub (back winded, forward current). I had called 2 months prior to going there to make a reservation with all my detail( beam, draft, footage ). Found out, yep, I was "on a list" but that list was first-come-first-served, I spent 3 hours going in circles. Due to that, I told them I would fine them 5,000 dollars. They laughed, and said "you can't do that"...I stopped going there. Fine enforced, 5 stays.

I would NEVER expect that at Leverick. We find that to be a welcome haven.

We did both in July. Scrub is a really nice change. Best showers in the BVI, nice shops (don't expect to buy much in way of provisioning though as everything is 2-3X cost on Tortola), awesome pools and trampoline if you have kids. We loved relaxing in the pool and being served drinks. Leverick is awesome too, the people, shops, Beach BBQ. As others have said, just different.

Re: Leverick marina vs Scrub Island marina - 08/24/2017 02:34 AM

Last time down there (July) I had a reservation at both for a night each. First time at both (not normally a marina user, I prefer a night on a ball or on the pick). Scrub worked out just fine, but you get what you see - which is a marina berth at a resort hotel. Perfectly pleasant and enjoyable - good food and facilities etc. Leverick didn't work out for the marina berth. Despite the booking some time in advance there was no room for us when we arrived. We spent the night on the pick instead. We did check out the Jumbies BBQ and that was fun. Will try again for an alongside stay next time - hopefully the booking works out better - i.e. we get to use the berth.

Thank you all for all the input. We are not "resort" people and prefer our deserted beaches over chairs lined up for rent. We were not excited about our over night at Marina Cay last time on our way from North Sound to Jost. We were looking for an alternative...

Re: Leverick marina vs Scrub Island marina - 08/25/2017 07:42 PM

Hmmm. I am confused. In your original post, it sounded like you were looking for advice on which of two marinas, referencing pools and slides. Neither Scrub nor Leverick has "chairs lined up" (e.g. CGB when cruise ships are in), but they also do not have "deserted beaches."

Re: Leverick marina vs Scrub Island marina - 08/25/2017 08:10 PM

I can't do a one versus the other, there's an obvious difference between them and we have always had a great time at both. We do appreciate how welcome Nick and Monica make us feel when we are there, that is a special draw for us. We travel in the summer months when the crowds are low, our experiences at both have been relaxing with great service. As far as Scrubs atmosphere, if you want the cool travertine tile feel, sure it's there, but they also offer an out of the way quiet place too. We have hiked to it a few times and we have been driven there by the free shuttle and they will return to pick you up when you want. Try wandering around you might be surprised at what's just around the corner!

Yes, sorry that was a bit confusing. I was asking about the marinas. People kept referring to Scrub as more American resort-y. The lined up chairs are what I think of when I think of "American resorts."

What didn't you like about Marina Cay? We always enjoy a stop there.

Re: Leverick marina vs Scrub Island marina - 08/25/2017 08:36 PM

Just don't do what we did, close down the bar at Willy T when they were trying to get rid of all the alcohol last night of the season and then go all the way to Leverick the next day. I was so hungover when we got there they almost didn't rent the safari truck to me to drive everyone around VG. None of us could drink that whole day and missed out on all the fun to be had there!

Re: Leverick marina vs Scrub Island marina - 08/26/2017 04:51 PM

We always do both - typically Leverick as the stop prior to Anegada and Scrub on the way back. You can't beat Leverick for Nick and his friendly staff and when the upstairs restaurant is open it is some of the very best fine dining in the islands. Top off on water and ice and it's a 2 hour run to the Setting Point on Anegada.

After 2 days on the sand at Cow Wreck, Scrub is a fun couple of days to get clean and cool and the swim up bar is just plain fun. If they'd only air condition the showers. Do not miss the slide to the lower pool and dinghy over to snorkel at Diamond Reef or take the ferry over to Trellis for the full moon party. We like Tierra Tierra as a consistently fun, low key dining experience but have had mixed experiences at Caravella.

In terms of the Marina, the docks at both are in very good condition and the staff at both are very professional and helpful. Both have TTOL rates and make it an easy decision to plan to stop at each.

In fact we'll be at Leverick tomorrow night (and maybe Tuesday) and Scrub next Wednesday and Thursday. Old friends at both and we visit 3-4 times a year.
