Hurricane Watch now and Warning shortly

Hurricane Watch now and Warning shortly - 09/04/2017 03:17 PM

Starting a new thread about Irma. It now appears that the sharp turn north is not going to happen. St. Maartin is already under the warning, so BVI and USVI will be shortly. It is also quite possible based on the NHC discussions that Irma could grow into a Cat 4, before long.

We just need a small turn, a 50 mile miss distance will minimize damage.

We can only hope for an extra sharp turn north real soon. I did not see any suggestion that the turn would not happen. Based on what I read about the high, I have been starting to wonder.

That one will go North. The greater concern is some models(but not the reliable Euro) showing a storm popping up just south of Tortola.

Where do all the charter guests stay if they can't get off island? Some of the hotels, like Maria's, Village Cay, etc., must be pretty vulnerable.

All depends... some may stay on boats at the dock, others hotels, some in panic will pay anything to get off the island, then there are always shelters just like the locals. Panic will certainly be an issue. The models are now showing extremely low pressures all the way to Florida and well inland into the US. If the mountains of Cuba or Hispaniola do not tear this beast apart the path of destruction will be very long. The key is always to find a place in the lee of something that will never move and where no mud slide or massive flash flood will find you. On some of these islands that can be a challenge.

If you are stuck and need a place let me know..no charge. Jim is moving to his place in Carrot Bay with our cat. If you need this contact me through here or malcolmboyes@earthlink.net Secondly it would be terrific if anyone on island could keep us updated as he storm hits as long as possible..thanks..stay safe..to be honest I would be happier to be there than here and have to watch from afar!

Paraquita Bay by Brandywine. You pay $350 up front plus your dues to the charter boat round table then a couple of hundred each year in dues or mooring fee per slot. There are not near enough to go around. But, enough to keep the industry in business until insurance and the builders can catch up.

Re: Hurricane Irma 9-5 8am advisory - 09/05/2017 12:04 PM

Hurricane Irma Special Discussion Number 25
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL AL112017
800 AM AST Tue Sep 05 2017

This special advisory is being issued to increase the initial and
forecast intensity of Irma.

NOAA and U.S. Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft have recently
measured peak flight-level winds of around 170 kt and SFMR winds
of around 150 kt. Based on these data the initial intensity has
been increased to 150 kt, making Irma an extremely dangerous
category 5 hurricane. Some additional strengthening is still
possible, but fluctuations in intensity are likely during the next
couple of days due to eyewall replacement cycles.

No change was made to the previous track or wind radii forecast.

KEY MESSAGES:

1. Irma is expected to affect the northeastern Leeward Islands as
an extremely dangerous category 5 hurricane, accompanied by
life-threatening wind, storm surge, and rainfall. Hurricane warnings
are in effect for portions of the Leeward Islands. Preparations
should be rushed to completion, as tropical-storm force winds are
expected to first arrive in the hurricane warning area later today.

2. Irma is also expected to affect the British and U.S. Virgin
Islands and Puerto Rico as a dangerous major hurricane beginning
tomorrow, with life-threatening wind, storm surge, and rainfall.
Hurricane warnings have been issued for these areas, and tropical-
storm-force winds are expected to arrive in these areas by early
tomorrow.

3. Irma could directly affect Hispaniola, the Turks and Caicos, the
Bahamas, and Cuba as an extremely dangerous major hurricane later
this week. Residents in these areas should monitor the progress of
Irma and listen to advice given by officials.

4. There is an increasing chance of seeing some impacts from Irma in
the Florida Peninsula and the Florida Keys later this week and this
weekend. Otherwise, it is still too early to determine what direct
impacts Irma might have on the continental United States. However,
everyone in hurricane-prone areas should ensure that they have their
hurricane plan in place.

Posted By: RatmansWife

Re: Hurricane Watch now and Warning shortly - 09/05/2017 01:28 PM

Can't think why cistern water wouldn't be safe, unless the cistern is inundated by groundwater. The big issue will be pumping the water if there is no electricity. If you have a generator, or a gravity feed system, no problem.
Posted By: CGB

Re: Hurricane Watch now and Warning shortly - 09/05/2017 01:42 PM

lol... dip/lift & carry.... almost fail-proof system

I guess the concern is contamination from airborne stuff ending up being washed into the cistern
But, this hurricanes aren't twisters... perhaps less of a concern

Re: Hurricane Watch now and Warning shortly - 09/05/2017 02:12 PM

I've been watching Irma over the last few days with growing fears for our beloved BVI. I've seen firsthand the effects from Camille (a Cat 5, 1969) and Katrina. The destruction was unimaginable - buildings, swaths of trees, etc., just gone, mostly from the storm surge, plus the wind.

For you folks there, don't take anything for granted. Get to high ground. My thoughts are with you.

Re: Hurricane Watch now and Warning shortly - 09/05/2017 02:14 PM

At 800 AM AST (1200 UTC), the distinct eye center of Hurricane Irma
was located near latitude 16.7 North, longitude 57.7 West. Irma is
moving toward the west near 14 mph (22 km/h), and this general
motion is expected to continue today, followed by a turn toward the
west-northwest tonight. On the forecast track, the dangerous core of
Irma will move near or over portions of the northern Leeward Islands
tonight and early Wednesday.

Reports from NOAA and U.S. Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft
indicate Irma continues to strengthen and maximum sustained winds
have increased to near 175 mph (280 km/h) with higher gusts. Irma
is an extremely dangerous category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson
Hurricane Wind Scale. Some fluctuations in intensity are likely
during the next day or two, but Irma is forecast to remain a
powerful category 4 or 5 hurricane during the next couple of days.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles
(220 km).

Much as I hate to say it the fate of the BVI hinges on when this turn occurs. If it's a bit early and we get a 45 mile miss distance this will be a bad dream. If not it may turn out to be a nightmare. To all my BVI friends hoping with all I have for a turn soon!

The reef to the North and the Island itself has a long history of protecting those in the Settlement from anything from the North. The real risk is anything sustained from the South. Sustained massive seas from the South at likely not in the cards from this one. At least those on Anegada are safe from mud and rock slides and the sudden torrent of a mass flood.

Latest projectons keep moving the track south so it could pass between Anegada and North Sound. North and east shores will catch the worst. North Shore from Joshia's to Smuggler's will catch it full in the face with 100kn+ winds. Looking a 10-12' surge over a 1.4' high tide and 10 to 12' waves on top

"Vivian Wheatley, proprietor of the Anegada Reef Hotel, planned to stay behind. She said she would stay in one of the hotel rooms and take advantage of the generator since there were no guests "We know it's a very powerful (storm), and we know it's going to be very close," she said. Really good job getting the canvas off MOST of the boats. Sadly those boats are way too close together with many remaining in the slips unprotected from anything real that might show up from the south. They may be good to go for a North blow but any real wind and surge from the south will end up with at least most of the boats piled up in the back. When one goes, they all will go like dominoes.

I don't blame BVI Pirate and his wife for leaving. Irma is one big storm. I hear some my be staying on Anagada and I don't doubt their choice, they have actual experience to draw from. But I do hope they will be fine as they ride this out.

Unless the path miraculously moves you really don't want to visit on the 15th. It will be better described as devastation than storm damage if a full on hit by a cat 5. Recovery will take a long time.

The BVI are my favorite place on earth, especially Anegada. I cannot imagine being there in this storm. Thoughts and prayers to all the wonderful people in the islands. I hope everyone makes it through this thing safely.

The one hope you have Thorsten is that the major winds will be coming over the ridge so South Sound might get a little shelter.

I was going to say something similar but you beat me to it. I really hope this is not going to as bad as it looks right now. The way it looks right now I'd be checking to make sure their trip insurance is solid for trips booked months from now.

Any word if they have shut down the electric grid yet?
Or at what hour they will - as a precaution?

No need to remind residents... but fill anything and everything with drinking water
Fill the freezer immediately with even ziplocs full of water - hopefully it will freeze in time

Power will be going out, if not already
Which also means - for the majority.. cooking will be off-line

Give it some thought - cook/fry.. prepare food, make sandwiches...

Re: Hurricane Watch now and Warning shortly - 09/05/2017 06:41 PM

Just when you think it can't get any worse, it gets worse. Projected track is now between Anegada and North Sound with one eye wall over Anegada and the other over Necker. Max winds over 185 which makes it the strongest Atlantic Hurricane ever recorded.

Keep in mind that the force of the wind increases as the square of the speed so every 5 knots can make a huge difference in destructive power.

I wish God's Blessings on all of you in BVI. We just finished with Hurricane Harvey here in Houston and have our eyes closely watching. Looks like a rough storm and hoping it passes quickly.

Stay safe and help everyone in need.

Blessings to you all.

GlennA, I'll go back and find the article, but earlier "someone" reported a gust of 220mph was recorded...is that possible??

***I edited my post to include this ABC news quote...

"Irma was packing 185 mph winds and gusts up to 220 mph as of before 2 p.m. ET Tuesday and is expected to continue churning with deadly hurricane-force winds and a dangerous storm surge across a wide swath of the Caribbean this week before moving toward southern Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC)."

Thanks Rick...
on a light moment - they note - grid will be shut down "if" winds exceed 40mph

Yeah...ok....

Keep in mind - island life means things sometimes get done on a whim

One of those moments... where it may not be advisable to procrastinate...

NHS 5 pm update has Irma starting the expected turn to the NW. Let's hope the turn is a bit greater than forecast. The turn at least should keep Tortola out of the NE quadrant.

Haha well the possibilities are endless! For sailing, you could see if you could get a boat out of Newport, Rhode Island and sail toward Martha's Vinyard.

If you're more of a beach person, I think the Yucatan is pretty safe from Irma, as long as you aren't flying thought Florida or Atlanta. Our favorite resorts are the Excellence Brand - luxury all-inclusives.

And of could if you can get a decent flight, now is a good time to be in Europe, even if it a short trip. Everyone is harvesting grapes right now because of the warm summer if you like wine. You can still probably get a beach week in Italy and Croatia - or pick up a boat there if you can get one. Northern Europe is still warm enough to be out all day - Amsterdam is one of our favorite cities.
