TMM Sea Tiger on the Reef

Posted By: BaardJ

TMM Sea Tiger on the Reef - 12/27/2020 04:39 PM

TMM boat Sea Tiger apparently on one of the reef between Stevens Cay and western tip of St John, near Cruz Bay. This is a No-Go zone with CYOA Yacht Charters exactly for this reason.

It’s a bit tricky a deceptive if you’re not looking at your chart.

Sea Tiger owned by a TTOL member. Sorry to see this, I had the same thing happen to my boat fortunately with only damage to the sacrificial part of the keel. Hope this incident turns out to be similar.

Re: TMM Sea Tiger on the Reef - 12/27/2020 08:33 PM

The keels are designed to be unbolted and a new one bolted on if the damage was confined to the keels. When the rudders get involved things start to get expensive. Every charter boat I owned has been aground. I was lucky in that none involved damage beyond some reglassing of the keels. This is one reason I never purchased a centerboard cat for the charter market. Groundings get very ugly!

Did they ever consider putting a buoy east of Skipper Jacob rock and have some reason to rule it out?

That would make the person liable if the buoy was destroyed and not put back and someone hit the reef.
Anyway almost every charter boat has been totally destroyed in hurricane Irma and Maria and the Moorings has been repairing them and selling them to hundreds of people

Re: TMM Sea Tiger on the Reef - 12/28/2020 12:07 AM

The Moorings lost about half their fleet. Those boats were totaled and are not being repaired. About a quarter of the fleet was in decent shape and a quarter needed more extensive repairs. Robert’s and Cane basically set up a boat building facility in Roadtown and the quality of the repairs has been excellent.

Maybe they'll install one now.

Was the cardinal buoy north of Mosquito rock always there, or did they put that up after the MarineMax incident?

What was the MarineMax incident?

Sorry, couldn't find the article link but there was a thread about it here.

I did see that the marker is fairly new: https://bvinews.com/company-awarded-327k-contract-to-install-26-sea-markers-across-bvi/

So sad to see this. She must have recently been delivered to USVI because I thought I saw her on the TMM dock a couple weeks ago...

Re: TMM Sea Tiger on the Reef - 12/28/2020 02:24 PM

I suspect she was moved to the USVI to try and generate some revenue. Repairs might be a bit complicated as the boat can’t go back to the BVI for a month. Still I hope he just needs some glass work on the keels which can be done competently by almost any shipyard.

Is that the exit criteria? You have to stay in the USVI for a month?

Re: TMM Sea Tiger on the Reef - 12/28/2020 09:39 PM

No, but all the news reports say there will be no entry by sea until either 21 or 28 January.

Re: TMM Sea Tiger on the Reef - 12/28/2020 09:48 PM

George, there are a few BVI captains approved by the govt. to move boats back and forth from USVI to BVI under the current restrictions.

Re: TMM Sea Tiger on the Reef - 12/28/2020 09:55 PM

I tried that option with my boat. They are or were booked up. If you have some recommendation please post or PM them to me.
TKS!

Ocean Dreams Water taxi service. Captain Christopher is very professional and will take care of you and your boat. He did this for us in December, I had reserved a slip in Red Hook and when I got there the boat was tied up in the slip and the ac running. It was actually a much nicer first and last day that having to travel by ferry to the BVI.

Roan Thornton, T/T -Tender Too Charters BVI, has government approval and has been moving boats back and forth between BVI and USVI, including ours. Email tendertoo@hotmail.com

very sorry to hear...Wes does such a great job with the Sea Tiger and we recommend it to our friends...

I was hoping the OP had the wrong boat as I couldn't enlarge the pic to see the distinctive "orange"...

Re: TMM Sea Tiger on the Reef - 12/30/2020 06:25 PM

I was not on Sea Tiger as a charter group with a professional captain (from USVI) was on board. Sea Tiger was grounded but freed without assistance. Finished charter after communicating with TMM. There reportedly was a "gouge" in the sacrificial keel. Again, was able to finish charter without incident.

Roan delivered back to TMM (as noted, he and several others are allowed by BVI government to deliver boats to/from STT(without interacting with passengers or crew, who depart prior to his arrival).

I am awaiting further inspection, but reports are that all will be repaired before my scheduled 1/16 trip.

(As many on here can attest, TMM always maintains/repairs to top-notch standards). I am sure after repairs, qualified surveyors will note damage as being repaired/restored fully.

Thanks to all for their concerns and support.

Re: TMM Sea Tiger on the Reef - 12/31/2020 03:10 AM

it might be....

Wes's boat is named for the Clemson (Tigers) college in South Carolina...

Their arch rival and my sons alma mater is the University of South Carolina college (Gamecocks)....

every time we go in the islands we always see "Sea Tiger" decked out in the Clemson orange...much to my sons chagrin

I hope you are well Sleepy Chef and look forward to getting to the Wonky Dog soon

Ballau,
We have taken many Gamecocks out to sea on Sea Tiger..., We even brought some of them back in from sea.

Seriously, we have enjoyed the recognition from many regarding Sea Tiger, often from other college fans and alumni (Georgia, Tenn, Alabama, Ohio State) just to name a few. They are passionate about their teams as are we, and they frequently take photographs and send to THEIR friends who are Clemson fans.

And perhaps we should add badminton racket on board so that we can swat Gamecocks!

Maybe just get a few of the electric fly swatters to really get the job done...

A few years ago we chartered Celtic Tide from TMM. While we were docked at Leverick another sailor wandered over and asked where we were from. He was from Alabama, where "Tide" only means one thing.

Dan cheers
