Quarantine insurance requirement

Quarantine insurance requirement - 09/30/2021 01:22 PM

I purchased travel insurance for our upcoming trip but it doesn’t include quarantine coverage. We will be on our own boat for the trip. Do we need to find insurance that includes quarantine coverage? I can’t see on InsureMyTrip where there are policies covering that. Does anyone know of policies we can consider?

The policy we got from Seven Corners was supposed to cover quarantine. I talked to their sales agent about possible scenarios. He said they would cover them. Of course the proof is in the pudding (we didn't need to make a claim). I have no financial interest in Seven Corners.

If anyone know of a repatriation and quarantine policy please share.

Conch Charters recommends this company and they do cover quarantine:

This insurance is an excellent choice. It is from a local company that worked the BVI Government to ensure it covered all the requirements.

They accept online payments and you can get proof of coverage immediately. Looks to be priced at $9.75/person/day.

Wow. Much more expensive than any of the other policies I have seen. Adds $400 to my trip costs. Lovely.

The Allianz travel insurance appears to meet the requirements and is much cheaper.

I wonder who is going to be reading these insurance policies when we arrive at the ferry dock. Mine is 20 pages long of fine print and so is my wife's. The policy does cover quarantine costs, but it's buried in the policy.

The one I originally bought was 70+ pages!

Is your own boat available to quarantine, if you need to stay longer? Our insurance does not cover that, but it wasn't an issue because we could stay in our own house. We do have MedJet, but no one asked to see the card and we didn't provide it.

It’s not, but I am sure there would be one available and I still have some owners time. But I don’t really want to have that conversation with the folks at the airport…

After reading the fine print of my current policy, I think it will work. I am sticking with it until I hear otherwise.

Allianz policies include coverage for COVID-19 sickness, as well as testing positive asymptomatically and the quarantine expenses. Their coverage is clearly defined on their site, and the Premier One plan provides $50,000 medical / $1,000,000 medivac/repatriation.

https://www.allianztravelinsurance.com/coverage-alerts/2019-novel-coronavirus.htm

We’ve used them twice for medical emergencies and the response time and support has been excellent.

One NOTE - We once relied on insuremytrip.com to compare policies but in recent years Allianz and other insurers have not been included in the comprehensive or medical options. So be sure to do your due diligence when researching. There is more info on the “COVID” thread…

Are the cruise ship crowd going to be required for this and checked? We all know the answer to that. Once the first cruise ship arrives is when they will probably edit this or scrap it altogether.

How bout this option?

Why not buy "quarantine" coverage for your day of arrival only....instead of the entire trip.

Since BVI is only testing you once upon arrival, if you test positive and need to be quarantined you would be covered and meet the BVI requirement.

After that it is on your own dime, as is the rest of the trip expenses.

The issue they have run into is people testing positive and then having to quarantine until they tested negative, or for their traveling companions, for a specified period of time. Of course the government was choosing the hotels, likely based on what they thought you could afford - and perhaps how much Uncle needed the revenue! Not every qualified hotel was treated equally.

If you have your own property or boat on which you can quarantine, that should be sufficient. Just have a ready explanation of how you will get food delivered.

But what if you text positive to come home?

Has anyone actually gone thru the "Test positive/Quarantine" process?

I imagine when you get "Quarantined" and you are move to a hotel, the hotel is going to ask for your credit card, not the name of your insurance carrier.

Yes, many have been through the positive test/Q ordeal in other areas, it’s a very real risk everyone traveling is willing to take, regardless of vaccine status.

Obviously you submit a claim to your insurer for the test and Q expenses… typing

I didn't happen to me or any of our guests but I have talked to people on the beach that it happened to. In their case, the entire crew quarantined on the boat and the charter company was able to accommodate them extra days on board. It took about 3 or 4 days to get them retested and cleared.

The biggest impact was to their airline reservations. The change fees and available dates complicated it. Not sure if they had insurance but I don't think they did. All things considered, they did fine, added a few days to their trip after they were freed from quarantine and they were busy enjoying Cane Garden Bay.

This is another reason to bring the eMed tests with you for exit testing. That way if you get a positive result, you can simply retest to make sure it's not a false positive instead of getting quarantined and waiting several days to retest.

Sound advice.

Jason, As you know I will be land based. Henny's place is Gold Star, will I be able to quarantine there? I assume so.

Hmmm, How do I make my eMed test come out positive? Ha ha! Thanks Jason. Any chance you will be over there between Nov 13-21?

I doubt it since we'll be there 25 November for 5 nights to celebrate US Thanksgiving and Lobsterfest...
