Roadside eateries

Roadside eateries - 05/04/2024 04:44 PM

Are there any roadside eateries on the Dutch side where you can get food to go? After a long day at the beach or a snorkeling cruise these were always a good option.
Thanks, Mike. Wheels up Monday morning!!

Captain D and Los Hermonos are ones that come to mind in Simpson Bay.

Cindy's Roti Shak on the Pondfill across from Blue Point (large yellow building.)

There are several others on the Pondfill with cuisine form all over the world.

The Pondfill proper name is Walter A. Nisbeth Rd and is in Philipsburg

Another place is in Sandy Ground/Nettle bay at the Cadisco gas station. It’s called Baie Nettle Rottisserie - here is the Facebook profile.

I put Driftwood up on that list!!! IMHO, they have great bar-truck food!!! I tried for the first time in my life last fall trip , don't know why! There shawarma sandwich!!! WOW so good!!! This past April trip Louise ordered the Shawarma salad and I got the "mixed" sandwich!! A word of caution, bring a roll of paper towels- wipes! Talk about messy eats!!! LOL!!!

Marks Place may not officially fit your definition of roadside eatery, but they do a booming business in takeout food. It’s handy if you need to pick up a few groceries—place your order before you go into Carefour, then pick up as you leave.

St MartinFan--yes, we have done a grocery run and Mark's run at the same time. They definitely do a huge takeout business.

Kim--I checked Facebook and those chickens look delicious. We will have to try Baie Nettle Rottisserie next trip!

Best are:

Lal's, even the top chefs on the Dutch side go to Lal's for food to go. Simpson Bay, not far from the end of the runway.

La Chingona, best Mexican food on island. Only place that I being a West Coaster and regular Mexico visitor will go at this time for Mexican food on island. Have tried the others, they don't compare. Near the Medical School in Jordan Village.

Pollos Hermanos, we don't stop there often but it is good.

It used to be for us ribs and chicken as well as scalloped potato dishes for pick up, but the Dutch side is not that great at it any longer. Say what you want about Lido but it was a bargain and good.

Todd--I hadn't heard of La Chingona. Is it carry out only? Can you give a better description of where it is?

As I was reading your last paragraph, my first thought was "Lido". It was tasty, but what we learned about it later made my stomach roll.

Understand on Lido, wasn't the issue more the store than the bbq in the parking lot?

La Chingona - around the corner from Fat Tony's towards the Medical School. Natural Cafe is on the same deck road side. They have tables to eat there as well that they share with Natural Cafe noting that the Cafe closes earlier so in the evenings it is just La Chingona customers. Their food keeps getting better and better each trip, adding items to the menu. It is one of the few places we will go to multiple times in a week, especially if staying anywhere near Cupecoy.

We eat there and also take food to go, MJ likes to get a burrito and have it for lunch the next day while I feast on Dany's ribs and chicken.

La Chingona opens at 4pm.

To tell you the truth, I can't remember exactly what was going on re Lido, but I believe they had people that were like prisoners, living in the back or something? I plead old age, as I don't remember.

Thanks for the info re La Chingona. Chile Rellenos! The only thing that concerns me is that they don't have wine, just beer and margaritas? Huhm.. Maybe I would need to do carryout.

Re: Roadside eateries - 05/09/2024 02:10 PM

I bet you could bring your own wine. It’s fantastic. We walk up for take out or just eat there. The owner Kyle Wathey and his wife (I can not remember her name) are so sweet. Kyle is Norman’s son from Emilio’s. Kyle had a food truck under the same name for a bit then opened this. One of our favorites in Cupecoy/Jordan Village area.

Todd - off topic but before you left did anything reopen where LaBotegga/The Braissere was. Such a great location can’t understand why nothing stays open there!

Re: Roadside eateries - 05/09/2024 02:47 PM

Kim--not sure I would feel comfortable hauling my own wine anywhere. I don't drink beer or margaritas. It's not a huge haul, but we'd have to go in the car to do pickup from Beachside.

Kyles wife is Jasmine, she is "La Chingona" (bad [censored] woman). She is from California, brings her Hispanic food upbringing from California to SXM. Both Kyle and Jasmine are awesome people and work hard, and do good for the community.

Kim, don't recall anything open there, not sure how much we paid attention however.

Carol, I understand not wanting to bring wine to a restaurant but I really don't think they would have an issue with it at all. Their focus is the food.

Re: Roadside eateries - 05/09/2024 04:32 PM

Sometimes we'll bring a special bottle to a restaurant and never have had a problem. Sometime there is a corkage and sometimes not. Common practice here at home.

Re: Roadside eateries - 05/09/2024 04:45 PM

Even if we brought the wine, we'd have to bring glasses also, I guess, as they don't serve wine.

Re: Roadside eateries - 05/09/2024 05:19 PM

I would guess they'll have some type of beverage glass you could use.

Re: Roadside eateries - 05/09/2024 05:46 PM

I guess. We'll see. So many restaurants, so little time.

Re: Roadside eateries - 05/09/2024 05:59 PM

Just chatted with Kyle, they are presently closed until May 23rd, in California for a wedding. No problem if you were to bring your own wine. At least for you Carol! I wouldn't bring your own beer or cocktails, but wine you got the OK.

Re: Roadside eateries - 05/09/2024 06:03 PM

Todd--Did you ask for him a 'secret word'??? laugh Tell him to just stock some cheaper wines, so others can enjoy them too, and we'll be all good! grin
