Anegada

We will be heading back to BVI the end of June for our second bareboat trip. On our prior trip, we used Leverick Bay as our starting point to head to Anegada. This year, we would like to try a different starting point as we weren't thrilled with Leverick Bay. Any suggestions for a location, besides Leverick Bay, to moor/anchor the night before heading to Anegada? Also, can we purchase fresh lobster in Anegada that we can cook ourselves? We are travelling with 4 children under the age of 7 so trying to do most of our cooking on the boat. Thank you!

I have pretty much always headed to Anegada from Leverick but other options are Marina Cay or one I dont like but many do..Scrub..or of course Trellis. All of those will be a long sail than Leverick but no big deal..

One of my favorite sails is from Cooper island to Anegada. The prevailing wind angle usually takes us just by the east end of Scrub Island then a straight shot to Anegada. It seems like when I try to sail to North Sound from Cooper I usually tack about half way to Anegada anyway in order to make it in to the sound. I then will sail back to North Sound from Anegada on the way back.

Are you avoiding north sound or just Leverick?

Just leverick.

How about vixen point opposite Leverick. It should be quiet and you can easily anchor.

Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor is an option, outside moorings or inside slips. A very nice overnight stop either way with interesting shore activities.

Plenty of nice anchoring spots in North Sound. Just west of Vixen Point at Prickly Pear Island has excellent holding, not too deep, and protected from E to NE winds plus you don't lose the sun behind VG as early as at Leverick.

The Spanishtown anchorage & moorings is a good option as mentioned if you're looking for some dinner ashore.

You also have the anchorage in Savannah Bay, VG in settled conditions and just south of Mountain Point, VG.

I've sailed to Anegada from St John via Soper's Hole, but you need the wind to be well to the SE for a one-tack sail, which you can get in June. Jost Van Dyke, Guana Island, and Cane Garden Bay are all possibilities with the prevalent SE wind in June if you look forward to a 4 hr sail.

Just wondering why you weren’t thrilled with Leverick? Our group has never been there and are planning on it during our trip in May. Curious to know your thoughts

On our recent trip, we moored at Marina Cay, then headed to Anegaga through the Scrub Island cut. Actually only 15-20 minutes difference in time sail to Anegada than from the North Sound. A starboard tack the entire sail.

SonofTheSea, we just didn't find it that pretty. We were there during the off season so nothing was going on...maybe that's why we didn't enjoy it. It was a great stop to re-provision, fill the water and gas tanks. Just looking for another option for this trip.

I know you prefer to cook on board, but Anegada is the one place I would highly recommend you go ashore. Specifically the Anegada Reef Hotel! When you make your reservations for dinner, tell them you have children with you. With advance notice (a few hours) they will provide all of the “food groups” children seem to depend on—- Mac and cheese, chicken tenders, burgers, hot dogs, not sure about pizza. Then you and your beloved can settle down to a wonderful lobster dinner.

We did this a few years ago with grandchildren on board who had just endured a rather bumpy and exciting (for us) sail from North Sound. This included a special needs grandson. It was wonderful to know the children enjoyed their dinner and could then play in the sand while we could linger over dinner. The staff were wonderfully accommodating to all of our needs, and a good time was had by all.
