My Brother Wants to Fish

My Brother Wants to Fish - 02/16/2016 03:44 AM

I just booked our 3rd trip to St Maarten for Nov 12th, 2016!!!!! My brother and sister-in-law are coming for the first time. He loves to fish, he has never fished in the ocean(he lives in Kansas City) but wants to trying maybe shore fishing. Any recommendations?? Staying at OBBR (which doesn't really matter as I have a car and love to drive around the island). I am pretty sure he would not be a fan of a charter that baits the hook, casts it for you, sets the hook, makes you reel it in, and then keeps the fish after you catch it all for a big price tag. If there is an interactive charter that's not too expensive, we may go for that. Look forward to being on-line with you all again for the next several months. Thanks for the help!!

I also stay at OBBR. Been fishing on the island for years. Buy a $20.00 collapsible fishing rod. (6 to 7') 10 to 12lbs line. Lures - rattle traps, 1/8 - 1/4oz plastic fish with weight in them. Broken backs work some time. Used to fish at OBBR where the Lighthouse has been built. Gate up now and can't get there. Early mornings on Dawn beach have caught fish. Don't know what they were, but had fun. Leaving OBBR head to Philipsburg and fish the salt ponds. Small Tarpon. Then head past the Heineken airplane restaurant to the rotary. All the water you see is loaded with tarpon. Nothing big but fun. Go on youtube and punch in tarpon fishing st martin. I'm the guy in the red shorts. At night at the Simpson Bay draw bright on the inlet side you can see the tarpon feeding. If you want to see big fish eat dinner at LEES and sit next to the water and throw a French fry in the water. you will see tarpon in the 50lbs range. Have Fun. Remember you can't catch unless your pole is in the water. LOL

My friend Thierry Benissa, who used to manage the beach at Club O, God rest his soul, used to fish off the rocks in Marigot harbor. Of course there's a fairly new marina (Marina Fort-Louis) there now. But I believe the stone jetty is still there.
From the road that runs closest to the water head north till you hit Rue De La Republique, go left passed Fort Louis and you will hit Boulevard Du Docteur H. Petit. You should see the jetty on your left.
Jetty fishing can be dangerous but Thierry said there are fish there.
I might also suggest getting a map of SXM from one of the TTOL sponsors in case someone else tells you of other places. It's great!
I looked at the sponsor list and I don't see the ad, but you can order a map on Amazon.

Awesome! Is there a place to rent equipment and buy bait?

Last time my honey brought his own surf rod with him in a rod case. We also put an extra large umbrella in the fishing rod case. I don't know where he got bait.
There's another option to using your own rod. Look at website stmartinfishinginhore.com. This guy has been in SXM quite a while. Also Google "in shore fishing in St. Maarten". There's quite a lot out there. Most posts are a little old but it may give you some insight.
Good luck!

I don't know where you are staying but at Dvi when we stayed in a unit facing Great bay early morning saw guys fishing off the rocks. One walked by our unit and offered us some fish.
