grand case - 10/19/2016 04:22 PM

Made dinner reservations for Le Tastevin and Ocean 82 and secured a rental car.

Need help with where to buy groceries and booze for our condo, staying in Grand Case (Blue Beach)

What currency is best - Euros or US?

Other tips on what to do in island appreciated. Thanks!

I do not know if the Super U in Hope Estate is open yet. If so, go there. If not, the closest large grocery store would be the Super U in Marigot. You can also get supplies at Le Petit Casino in Orient Village. It's smaller than Super U and a bit more expensive, but closer to you in GC and on your way home, if you happening to be going to Orient for the day.

Super U or Petit Casino work wonderfully unless you are looking exclusively for US products. If so, you would be better off going to the Carrefour in Cole Bay, or the Grand Marche at the roundabout, close to Phillipsburg.

As far as currency, if you're talking about groceries only, I don't believe the Super U is doing 1 to 1 on the Euro any more. So it really doesn't matter what currency you pay in. Check in the store when you go in and if they are doing 1 for 1, it will be cash only, to get the 1 for 1. SOME restaurants will do 1 for 1 for cash, which does have a tendency to make you go through a bit of cash, for high end dining.

The Super U n Hope Estate is not open yet. In fact it doesn't look like it will be anytime soon. No work has been done as yet. The small grocery store in Hope estate (to the left of Super U) is nice, but expensive. Definately, your best option is Super U at Howell Center in Marigot. The Euro is so low now that it really doesn't make much difference, but it's not really necessary to buy Euros. Pinel Island ($12 pp ferry out of Cul de Sac), The Butterfly Farm, Parrotte Ville bird Park ($10 pp in Belvedere), Celine Too (Boat trip), Casinos, Singer every night at Toppers in Simpson Bay, Beach

Thanks for the info on Super U in Hope Estate. Any idea why they are not working on it yet? Originally they said it was supposed to be back open by October..

No, not a word...There has been some clearing done on the lot next door to the left. Somebody told me they were making it bigger, but there has been no sign of construction inside or out.

Blue beach is the most perfect location in grand case. When is your trip.

Two great restaurants, you will enjoy.
You might want to think about the booze in the room deal. If you are home bodies and like to chill then stock up. We have found on our trips that when we are out at the beach all day, happy hour and dinner that we tend to leave some barely used bottles behind that we thought we indispensable day one. Depending on the days that you will stay in, you may want to purchase as you go, except sparkling that needs to be stocked.

Is this a restaurant or a location?

There is also a smaller market near your apartment within walking distance that is surprisingly well-stocked. Slightly more expensive but very convenient to your location. Dollars are fine.

Where in Grand Case? We'll be staying at GC Beach Club. Is it w/in walking distance?

It's within walking distance only if you're buying a small quantity of light-weight items - I wouldn't walk that far with liquids or heavier items. If you walk down the main road along all the restaurants, the Asian market (although they carry everything) is on the left just after Piazza Pascal. Or it might be just before - but it's right near there on the same side of the road.

If you need to buy heavy things or large quantities, you may be better off going to Hope Estate to the bigger supermarket if you have a car.

Thanks jamiegarrett761. I now remember that store. We stopped once for bottled water. But it's not conducive to full groceries or lots of bottled water. We stopped each time we walked into town and carried a large bottle each.

Miss the market that was near the bridge on the water side nearer to the Beach Club.
