Baguette - 07/30/2017 09:04 PM

It's "A long thin loaf of French bread". It's my #1 food in SXM. I love it nice and fresh in the AM. How about you do you like this bread???

It is awesome eaten with Boursin garlic and fine herbs. It's a cheese spread, and for some reason it tastes better when eaten in sxm!

I like it best when eating it in the car after picking up a fresh loaf from La Sucriere. Almost never makes it back to the room.

Love it with butter or as the bread on a sandwich.

We generally get our 'going home' sandwiches from there of late along with pastries to take home. The ladies pack the cooler for us and always with a smile and a 'Godspeed' as we leave.

Zee best has a very good baguette sandwich...brie and fig jam. I've tried, to no avail, to recreate it's deliciousness. Our first trip to SXM (7 days long), we only brought $400 cash, a credit card and discovered we had forgotten to bring our debit cards. Cash on the island is crucial! We then made the mistake of purchasing a very very small cooler....$50!!! We practically LIVED on baguettes & beer that trip!! Not so fun at the time but makes me laugh now.

You made me smile with this post.

Our very first trip was so many years ago - 44 this coming November to be exact - and we were kids. The only other place we'd been to was Bermuda on our honeymoon seven or eight years before so we were pretty green as travel experiences went. The SXM experience was a promotional trip sponsored by a company we dealt with in our fledgling business (I think we probably owed them our souls at the time) but we did accumulate enough points to qualify for it.

We were in our mid twenties and as poor as 'church mice' as the expression goes. We had two small kids, a house we'd just built with what we thought of as a hefty mortgage back then (and one people would love to have in today's world....) and a business we were still struggling to get off the ground.

For all intentions St. Martin was the last thing in the world we should have done given our finances at the time but the trip included airfare, hotel and meals along with several cocktail parties so we thought we could handle it. We brought what we thought was a princely amount of money - $500.00 in cash. Surely that would be plenty! Who knew?

I'm pretty sure there were credit cards back then and I'm equally sure we didn't have any and there was no such thing as a debit card at that time. And since all we had to pay was for our personal entertainment - drinks, trips, etc., believe it or not, we made it through the week although towards the end we were starting to get nervous. I remember my DH putting a five dollar bill in a secret spot in his wallet jic the finances got really hairy. We didn't want to be stranded on the island because we couldn't afford the departure fee of US $2.00 per person.

Those were the days, my friends........

I remember putting aside the departure fee in a secret spot too so we would be sure to have enough cash to leave.
Fresh baguette is the best, but the best toast is made from day-old baguette with Dutch butter and Bonne Maman jam!

Re: Baguette - 07/31/2017 03:38 PM

Kathleen,

I agree absolutely. When John has his morning pastries I often make baguette toast and like you, use Dutch butter and Maman raspberry jam. Yumm.....

We find we spend very very little cash in SXM. Always bring most of it back home.

You would think so! However, we snorkeled and swam so much I think we ended up losing weight that trip! Not so much on the others though!

Re: Baguette - 08/01/2017 05:56 AM

What a great story Pat! Thank you for sharing -it made me laugh as well. Our experience certainly changed our trip and dictated much of where we went and what we experienced. It kept us away from Happy Bay toward the end of our trip because we felt so badly that we couldn't support Dany's beach lolo. However, Grand Marche accepted credit cards and we cooked in several nights...fish and such using spices we purchased at the Marigot Wednesday market. We have some of the best memories from that trip! Everything was brand new to us and so visually stimulating! All we really cared about was the gorgeous blue water, the warm sun on our bodies, and checking out the fish and sea urchins for hours upon hours. Sarafina's baguette sandwiches made for cheap eats on the beach and we felt like we were in heaven! But it was pretty exciting figuring out how to fill the rental car gas tank at the end of our trip when all we could find was stations taking cash only!
