I saw the title of your post and my heart dropped...fearing bad news.

I heard from Maggie yesterday afternoon. They were preparing and asked for prayers. Terri was home making last minute preps as well.

So worried. Does not look good. I have a decision to make regarding our trip in 50-ish days.

I have not heard a thing. Terri hasn't posted on fb. I do know the Golf Course shop roof is blocking the road into Mullet. All services went down around 7:45-8:00am. I was in a WhatsApp chat group with other owners at Cupecoy Beach Club. And we have not even seen pics except for a few of the wall. Elaine at Rainbow has not checked in. But all utilities are down

The road being blocked by the roof probably isn't much of an issue...you need a boat to get through Mullet Lake on a regular rain.

So the roof is the old INconvenience store, right? Or as your family calls it Tiffany's...lol

I received a very short note from Shurma St. Clair who assured me the staff is okay but said nada about the property itself. If Luis -1995 - is any indication of what may have happened, I'm hoping the problems are minor. The Towers lost a few roof tiles and some landscaping in that storm while St. Maarten lost most of Mullet Bay Resort. I'm hoping for a similar outcome this time but I'm not too optimistic........

As for actual communications with them, I plan on waiting at least a week or two before I think about changing or cancelling our November or March trips. They have enough on their minds right now, I'm sure, but in my heart and mind, as much as I'd love to be there, I don't think the island will be remotely ready to receive visitors judging by the photos I've seen today and I would hate to pose a burden by my presence. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

Pat, I understand your thought to cancel November.

But conversely...IF things get opened, I would think they would welcome whatever support and dollars we are able to bring into the island.

There are two storms coming behind Irma however....<sigh>

We will wait as well. And hope JetBlue will be affable if we change.

If need be, we could bring food. Because the pictures I saw of Carrefour did not look good. But they must get those places up and running to serve the island residents.

For what it's worth, back in early '95, John and I had booked a weeks vacation at Mullet Bay Resort through AA on one of their package deals for November.

Needless to say, Luis had other plans in mind. The airline contacted us regarding that trip and told us our scheduled resort was damaged beyond repair and the island wasn't ready for vacationers and suggested we choose another destination or cancel our vacation plans for that timeframe. We ended up in Aruba - our first and last trip there. I think our minds and hearts were in SXM even if our realities weren't and that ended up as our least favorite of all our different Caribbean island vacations. Aruba just wasn't St. Maarten. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

Pat...this time may be different. After seeing the pictures of the damage at the airport itself...may take quite a while to be able to get a plane to land or take off there. In one of the posts it mentioned you couldn't even see the runway through all the sand. Don't know how they will get the tourists that are on the island out of there. In an other post someone mentioned that they expect a high loss of life. God...i hope they are wrong. Pictures of the Sonesta looked like pictures of the old mullett bay....in some you could actually see the steel girders through the holes in the buildings......horrible. If the Sonesta basically collapsed...can't imagine how some of the lesser buildings fared.

After any/all rescues have taken place and the roads are cleared, the airport will be pretty well priority 1. Massive amounts of supplies will have to be flown in. The place might not be pretty, but it will function.

I agree. Opening the airpot for aid and supplies is the first order of business.

The Dutch marines will use a bulldozer and clear the sand from the runway, as they have in the past.

It won't be an airport with all of the bells and whistles, but it can function.

Lynn,

I've scanned every photo I've seen and I've not yet found one picture of the Towers but from all that I've read, beyond roof damage and some water damage to the upper floors, the building itself is okay. It's so far off the beaten track and the road through Mullet towards Cupecoy is reportedly a mess so I'm going to draw the conclusion it's okay until someone tells me otherwise. The note I had yesterday said the staff was okay so I'm hoping that holds true, but I do wish one of the staff members would post something officially to help us put our minds at ease. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />.
