The Horny Toad Guest House - 09/07/2017 03:30 AM

Confirmation from a local on Facebook that The Horny Toad is "gone."

I had paid-in-full reservations for three weeks there in November.

Not good for you or them.

I'm getting the feeling we're all gonna be depressed in someway, I already am, and I haven't heard about my main hangouts on the French side from mont Vernon, grandcase, and the yellow umbrella place.

I see anise marcel was hit and grand case. The silence from/about Orient is deafening and frightening.

If the few reports are indication, my imagination tells me this is all gonna be about providing fresh water, food, healthcare and disease prevention and providing shelter to thousands and providing law and order.

Then, we can hopefully help out by bringing our business to whoever is able to restart/open, someday.

Sorry to hear that. Given that they have built up a fairly good return guest reputation, I am sure when they get things straightened out they will refund the money. Did you use a cc to pay for the three weeks? Hopefully it will get all sorted out shortly.

No, as they charge 5% more for CC payments. I mailed them a check.

Is Horny Toad Carter? Byblos connection? Or am I confusing it with Tortoise Shell?

Yes, you are confused. Carter/Byblos sold Turquoise Shell Inn a couple of years ago. Horny Toad is, well, was, a little bit further down the beach toward Mary's Boon.

Thanks for the update but very sorry to hear this. As you know, Horny Toad was a favorite of ours also. Keep me posted if you get further information. They have been through this before and I would think they will make things right with your payment.

Horrible news, it always looked like a fun place to stay. We've been staying at Las Arenas for the past 8 years, right next door. Wonder how they made out.

Again, has anyone else really confirmed this?? There have been reports that Mary's Boon was "gone", which was incorrect, and that Beachside Villas was "gone", which again, thank god, was incorrect. Can anyone actually confirm this???

Beside BSV and Horny Toad there are many places on Simpson Bay that have no confirmed reports of damage. Pictures or confirmed information would be helpful for Mary's Boon, Cocos, and Ocean's Edge would also be appreciated.

I do hope all is ok at Horny Toad. I am concerned because as i remember it was a mostly wooden building. The damage is obviously incredible but I think a lot of reports have been exaggerate or overstated. It was reported that the airport was destroyed when it is obviously not destroyed. Mary's Boon is damaged but all buildings but one in tack with some roof damage. One small wooden building was destroyed. All others ok. I realize it is been a huge blow to the island but it seems to me like there's way too much to much doom and gloom. The island will rebuild ,yes it will take plenty of years but when the snow starts flying and it's freezing outside that beach and sun is gonna sound awfully nice.

Horny Toad has some concrete walls but also a lot of wood and some of the beams are massive. I have talked to a couple regulars that stay at HT and nobody has information yet. Pretty sure Betty has retired (or soon to be) and was off island with her daughter running the place. There have been attempts to make contact but no success yet.

Had a long talk with Betty this morning. First the good news: Debbie and her husband Doug were off island and are OK. Cherry, a longtime employee and manager is also safe.

The damage to the Horny Toad is severe. The smaller building where the owner/manager office was located is no more.
The second floor of the main building is gone. There is so much debris that no one has been able to view the building from a water view.

There is not enough information to make any long term decisions. Let's all hope we Toadys will return.
