Most people will have no money to spend there. They need water more than beer or wine right now. Perhaps they can contribute to rebuilding in some way.

My point exactly, PelicanPirate.
Let's not condemn anyone for positive steps. Someone has to be the first to open and I appreciate any baby steps in this totally horrible situation.

On laser 101, lady saying they are impressed GEBE has current flowing to some less than 1 week after Irma. She said it took 3 months after Luis for first current flow.

Also, heard some have water flowing. Should still boil.

it's symbolic, and very positive. And, there's still lots of money around SXM.

Dont want to come off cynical...snide...or any other way....but what good is having the Red Piano opening?? If there are no tourists...what good is having a bar open??? These people need food....water....electricity....and all the other basics to live. With all the chaos going on...i would think a place serving alcohol would be counter productive. Would much rather hear that grocery stores...pharmacies....and other essentials are open.

I realize a bit of normalcy will go a long way....but sorry if i can't be excited about the Red Piano.

Must disagree with some. My past week has been insane in Orlando. I'm sure not nearly what SXM is going through....but my hour at the bar yesterday was my first moments of normalcy in a while! Getting power and Internet back today helped as well. Fortunately, the house wasn't torn up like it was in 2004.

There are island residents who patronize Red Piano.

I agree with Linda. AND, it has been reported elsewhere that grocery stores, banks, gas stations, and pharmacies are opening. Yes, their hours are reduced, and purchases are limited, but they are opening. After a week of backbreaking work in horrific conditions, a couple of drinks sound like just the ticket to me. Cheers!

We are from New Orleans.... After Katrina many said to implode the Dome and let the Saints move... Far sighted folks, including the NFL commissioner and our Governor felt the symbolism of fixing the dome in time for the Saints to play in September 2006 would go a long way towards healing the city.. For any sports fan that watched the opening game in 2006 saw a city being reborn in front of their eyes...

Open the Red Piano Bar... Open what you can. Show the world that SXM is stronger than any damn storm...

Freakin EXACTLY <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Thumbsup.gif" alt="" />

I was in NO after Katrina and whatever was opened was full of rescue/relief workers and residents just trying to regain normalcy. This is important....

GO FOR IT!

I stand corrected.. Been there just a few times...but have never seen any ''locals'' there. I guess I don't spend enough time at the bar. smile

Perhaps you have the wrong definition of "local". We see lots of island residents at the Red Piano. Who do you think the bartenders, servers, and entertainers are? Yes, they're "locals". To think that everything on the island exists only for the benefit of tourists is pretty unrealistic. Local residents like entertainment too!!

Well said, Georgia. While we don't live on the island, we have many, many friends and family who do and they frequent the Red Piano on a regular basis.

Also saw that Topper's was open yesterday.
