May 2018 trip report #2 - 06/11/2018 04:24 PM

Somehow on St Maarten I am awake and out earlier than I manage to do at home. Perhaps because they don’t participate in Daylight Savings time, but it’s sunnier and brighter earlier which helps get my butt out of bed. We left Orient by 11:30am and drove back through Jordan Village. Lots going on back there near the AUC. Restaurants and a very well stocked grocery, Carrefour Express. Picked up two steaks, fresh tomatoes, and baking potatoes. Dropped them off at our villa and then hit the pool for a dip.

Suddenly we realized we were hungry again!
So a trip to Curry-in-a-Hurry was in order. Located in Simpson Bay along the water, and behind a casino (the old Grand Marche). Hubby had curried goat and I wanted curry chicken but it was not on the menu. I asked about the stewed chicken, and they said that they could make that curry for me. Yes! Was trying to order a rum punch but somehow ended up with a rum and coke…lol..oh well, lost in translation I suppose.

Needed a mani-pedi so we stopped at Beautique (thanks for the recommendation Elaine!) and had wonderful service there. I must say it was “interesting” to see how it’s done outside the US.
Instead of barbicide, they sprayed tools with Lysol! Lol And the foot buffing pumice was a piece of wood with sandpaper wrapped around it! I could only laugh. Got a punch card to use in future visits, as once you’ve been 6 times you get a free mani or pedi.

Back to the pool and then out for a sunset drink at Driftwood

Dinner was at “home”, grilling the steaks on our deck.

Friday morning was a lazy breakfast in the room, made by hubby

Off to Pinel as I didn’t want to be there on a local heavy weekend and have to fight for chairs. Cul-de-Sac stinks to high heaven with the seaweed rotting on shore and in the water. THICK!

We chose to sit and eat at Karibuni for the day. (Karibuni is Swahili for Welcome) They are still clearing and cleaning. In between serving drinks or cooking, the guys are carrying sticks and debris to clear the beach. They are using a generator. While there we had the misfortune of seeing a cute black lab puppy attack a fairly large iguana. The dog was a very good hunter and chased the iguana into the water. He came up with it between his teeth, chomping down right in the middle of the iguana. It later died.

For lunch we went up to sit in the restaurant. Hubby had trunk fish stuffed with mahi mahi. A mahi civiche as an appetizer. He was full after the appetizer, as it came with rice and a salad. Of course we had to have a Clos Beylesse.

Margarita the chicken ate lots of French fries and lettuce!

Lunch was not inexpensive and came to $130 US. That does not include our separate tab with the beach boy.

The beach boy was giving little shot samples of a frozen mojito. Of course, it was delicious and we had to have the full-size version! Perfectly refreshing on a hot day in the sun.

The last ferry on this day was 4:00. A group of very drunk girls had been at Yellow Beach (with their mother and grandmother) and they held the ferry up. They had to go tell them to settle their tabs and get on the boat! Very rude and inconsiderate behavior. Everyone was yelling that we should leave their drunk a**es. Funny thing, Scubaman was on the same ferry sitting behind us….who knew?! Lol

When we got back to our villa the water was out. Oh well, off to the pool. They said GEBE was working on the problem…we think someone cut it accidentally. Water was back on two hours later when we got back from the pool.

Dinner was hamburgers at Rusty Rocket (Kim’s recommendation!). The flavor of the burger was good. Drinks were awesome. Tree Rum Punch…..yeah, I know…3 rum punch. For me the jury is still out on this place. Seating was next to the airport road, behind boulders. I kept thinking I had the potential to be hit at any moment. The place is VERY local. Everyone knew everyone, and I saw and caught up with some people I didn’t expect to see. People working in a new place as where they were previously was destroyed. In fact…most people I know are now working two jobs to make ends meet. Ran into the girl from the Yacht Club, also working at Buchaneer.

Food at Rusty Rocket comes in a bag. Owner Jamie, with the help of his cousin Chris. They provided individual wi-fi codes (like at the old Executive Lounge at the airport). The burgers come with a slaw that has bourbon or whiskey in it, but I wanted lettuce, tomato, and onion. Nope. They don’t have it. When I inquired why, the owner said, “because that’s not the way I like it.” Ummmm, ok. If I return I will bring my own damn lettuce, tomato and onion! I think it really would have made the burger and I would’ve been a happy camper. Not sure his business model is the route to long term success.

This may be upside down…sorry.

Coming up……shopping, good deeds….charity work.

Were you about to just walk in to Beautique? I tried doing that last year, and they said they were all booked.

I am not a fan of iguanas, but that's kind of a sad story. smile

Linda, I did initially try to walk-in and was asked to come back in two hours. I believe that they called someone in for us (two of us).

No problem, I put their phone number in my phone for the future (note to self...make an appointment!) and then spent the wait time at
the Dinghy Dock! No worries mon.
