They are slowly killing people here. Closing your windows and doors does not help. Many in the area don't even have windows and doors!

Hurry everyone, close all your windows! Like that will help. Lots of cruise ships coming in now for the high season. Symphony of the Sea, I believe Mon. or Tues. They might not be too happy.

Wow, it is still going on? One of our "newbies" has asthma should we be concerned? Any time I have visited the island , starting almost yearly since 2005, we have yet to experience the dump smoke. So, having said that, I am wondering just how bad it is? We are not coming till January, but still it's a little unsettling reading about this and travelling with an asthmatic. Wow, I would think that the government would be worried about as you mentioned,,of turning tourists off visiting the island, also all those mega yachts, etc. etc. But, anything I have read about the sxm government, they are either hard to deal with or don't care. That is a sad situation.

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/03/2018 03:42 PM

Would be very concerned. My sister is an asthmatic, and I know for sure the toxins remain in the air, and could very well trigger an attack. Not to mention!!! If it goes on fire again. No the air can not be good for anyone with lung issues. This has to effect everyone, and time will tell how many people get sick from this... Feel bad for those that live on Island for sure...

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/03/2018 05:27 PM

So has all of this dump fire smoke gotten worse? Wonder how come I have never experienced it and have been going to sxm since 2005? We always travel in Jan, Feb or March. Those are the only months we have been there. Does anyone have an answer to that? We obviously did not go Jan 2018 as it was too soon after Irma. So that is the only time we missed. I guess I am just asking if this is a continual thing now? Has something changed?

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/03/2018 05:37 PM

Where do you stay? It may be far enough away not to pose a problem for you. Whichever way the wind is blowing, go the other direction.

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/03/2018 06:16 PM

My understanding is that there was a 'small' fire on Sunday, but that it supposedly has been extinguished. (Doesn't mean it couldn't start up again tomorrow though.)

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/03/2018 06:38 PM

It'd been ongoing for many years but has gotten worse. Just depends where you are and wind direction.

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/03/2018 07:31 PM

We most often stay at Royal Palm....or Simpson Bay area....once at the old Caravansarai,,,and only once out at Sapphire. so...most of our stays are in simpsonbay area near Royal Palm, sbr or La Vista....but almost everyday while on island we travel to all parts of island. I just have been reading so much about it lately, that it made me think that it is way more likely to encounter this, even tho we have "never" on all our previous visits. We also go to Phillipsburg a lot as well. Just an observation of what I have been reading, so I asked the question if anything had changed, or if the problem has obviously gotten worse. Too bad for the island, will certainly turn a lot of people off.

Not that small. We were choking here in Cupecoy in the afternoon.

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/03/2018 07:44 PM

It's odd how the prevailing winds often seem to blow it that way.

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/03/2018 08:32 PM

I think anyone with lung problems could be effected. I would rethink trip here while this is ongoing. Even with no lung problems this can not be good. My brother is a pulmonary doctor in R.I. and when we spoke of this, he said we should not go back. We will as our home is there, but not a great breathing Island for sure. No no. lung issues not good. Not a good ad for Island, but this has to be addressed.

The trade winds are usually easterly so that is where it would most likely head.

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/03/2018 09:40 PM

oh dear. Shall we all figure out where to avoid the toxic fumes???? Thanks for your expert help. usually is not good enough. People will feel these effects no matter where they are. Again. Like it or not. no one with lung issues should be on Island. period. You do not have to like what I say, but this is more about health than a message board that hates negative. this is negative.

Aren't you a breath of fresh air.

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/03/2018 09:54 PM

nope just the truth. making people aware that have lung issues is not a bad thing. What you do not like hearing is your problem. If I get to just a few that read this. It prevents illness that can be avoided. I never want to be a breath of fresh air if it people that are full of air.

So what post did you read of mine that set your tone of voice with me that I felt impelled to quote and reply to previously. I don't have a problem. I believe this dump issue is disgusting for tourist and locals to put up with too. Not sure what thorn your sitting on but give it a rest.

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/04/2018 11:37 AM

I waste management solution is to burn garbage and has been that way for forty years. The garbage created on SXM has piled up since Irma and tourism.
The one good thing is the smoke keeps away the zika mosquito...

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/04/2018 11:42 AM

Carol. I think whats negative here is!!! A dump that is not under control... Not sure if it matters which way the wind is blowing!!!! as this is a small Island. And the fact that folks are breathing this toxic air. I realize this is not a great advertisment for the Island, but common sense tells us that there are alot of people that have no knowledge of this and may have lung disease, Not everyone that travels reads or is on this message board, so this will effect some people. Its not what I say that is offensive!!! Its me saying it. If what I say is wrong please just say so... Not sure anyone would say this is not a health issue. I have no problem being wrong, but know others must be right...

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/04/2018 01:36 PM

All smoke is toxic. Tobacco fire, wood fire, garbage fire and especially plastics. Remember the "air is ok" after 911? The effects can take years to develop but develop they do. When plastics are burned at low temperatures (relatively speaking) really bad materials are formed. Downwind from an island dump fire is not a good place for a person with asthma or for anyone else.

As someone who has read much of what sasasal written over time, I do not believe this was written by her. Read it and read many of her older posts. Am I the only one who thinks so?

I have no idea why it bothers me so much, but it does.

If I am wrong, I’ll shut up

Huh? Do you have spellcheck?

I can only speak for myself but since the hurricane you have come on here and whined constantly about YOUR situation and virtually every post you make (both here and on facebook) is NEGATIVE.

It is not a matter of not liking what you say. BTW, ERIC (not erick) seldom posts.

I don't use spellcheck or grammar apps but write how I talk... so I think I am fine with the mess but not the disrespect! Shalom!

Re: Landfill fire toxic smoke - 12/07/2018 01:29 PM

Hey. I did not write that post. I did say in another post, that I get called down for whatever I post... So someone here is playing games, and the only people that have access to my user name and password would be the moderators. And you!!! Rural carrier are the fist to get sarcastic... I hardly post here or anywhere, but somehow anything that sheds a bad light on the Island, no matter how true, no one can tolerate. You will actually find people that say the truth no matter who likes ti or not...Sooooooo. the dump is not good for anyone and the toxins are in the air. Nothing done to contain this, it will cause long term problems.

No, not unless Dilbert is/was sasasal. This one is done.
