Where was?

Where was? - 11/09/2018 10:38 PM

Does anyone remember Sebastian's Restaurant? I'm trying to remember where it was. I think in Mary's Fancy area. This goes back pre 80's, Remembering when La Vie en Rose was waterfront---before they filled in the are in front thus moving back the water.

I don't know the names of the roads in SXM but I believe it was on the main road heading to Grand Case on the left side, not too far from GC. That probably doesn't help you at all. LOL

Correct . We went there way back in the 80's . Food was awesome . That time it was the Francs , hence via credit card food was very cheap. But we did tip them well. Those days we had our two kids going with us for dinner soley on the French side because the Dutch side during that time didn't have much wow restaurants. During that time it was Mullet Bay Resort where we had great food on my Management account . That was what life was very great then.

Sebastiano's was in Grand Case on the left hand side, a block or so before where the one way street comes out of Grand Case. This was circa 1995. Before that, I don't know.

Yes, it was just outside of Grand Case directly on the water. Absolutely beautiful inside and the food was fantastic. It's still there but obviously not opened. It's such a shame such a beautiful place that it remains empty and has for quite a while. Passed by it a couple of weeks ago and brings back so many fond memories.

They had a singing host taking you to the table.

We didn’t have the singing host but to this day, my BIL and Sister rave about the incredible dinner they had there with us in 1984. It was their first trip to the island and my BIL didn’t want Italian food, claiming he was not a fan. And was he ever surprised, the food was out of this world and gave him a whole new perspective on Italian restaurants.

Thank you but it was not Sebastiano's which I know was GC. Great too.

This was a large house on the Dutch side somewhere off the road coming from P'Burg , on the right side. named Sebastian. They served dinner on a veranda that had tall stone columns painted salmon color. Very elegant. The speciality was squid ink pasta with pink vodka sauce, a work of art as well as delicious.

I remember the road sign was Mary's Fancy. Could it be the place was called Mary's Fancy and the chef was Sebastian? And maybe he opened the place in GC later???? I also remember seeing sign Mary's Boon the same time and we almost got lost trying to find the place. Back then Marys Boon was just a hotel not TS units. We stopped there realized it wasn't;t the place and a man told us where to go.

Could it have been Spartacus? They had caged birds, maybe Mynas(sp) in the women’s washroom.

I think you're correct. It could have been Spartacus. Thanks LINNY. I just found an old photo ut it didn't have the name.

I remember driving by a sign that said that, never ate there though.

Carol it was one of our first times trying a great place on island. Back then we didn't care what it cost. We'd save all year just to eat in SXM. We'd mix it up with small local places in P'Burg like Pinocchio's and the pizza place across the street that didn't serve pizza until the sun went down because it was too hot to turn on the ovens. A buffet style take out place near Great Bay hotel.

We tried Le Bec Fin when it was in P'Burg, Poisson D'Or twice but I can't remember if it was in Marigot or on the way to Grand Case. Oceanfront with an art gallery attached.
Le Pressoir, Auberge Gourmand when Christopher was a waiter---he now owns La Villa which we still stop at every year. Caravanseri had a restaurant in a gazebo over the water. Once waves crashed over and all, including piano player got drenched---free dinner!

I've forgotten more than I remember. Now we eat once or twice in a very upscale place such as Sol e Luna, Le Pressoir, and late unches at places like Le Taitu. Digestion isn't the same as you age. But you're too young to know that.

You've got some great memories!

We as well went to Le Bec Fin. Anniversary dinner. I find that if I didn't write on the back on my pictures I wouldn't recall anything...lol....and NOW with everything on a phone, I sure as sh*t don't remember anything unless I keep a separate file with notes. wink

Yes, Beach Kitten so true. Now I'm going through old photos and saying "Where in H@## was that taken?"

Like a fool I had my photo taken at the beach at the end of the runway, hand held up as if I was holding up the plane. And lots of photos of a place with Birds of Prey. I think it was on a hill near he medical school.

Photos of our climb up Pic Paradise. Wouldn't do that today!

Watching a man build a beautiful wall at Cupecoy. As if we'd never seen a wall. And back then I thought Columbine and the melon farm was the most beautiful part of the island.

Speaking of Columbine, did ETNA ice cream factory ever sell? I heard it was for sale and wished we could buy it but then I'd eat all the profits!!

There were some really great restaurants. If I recall correctly, there was a restaurant on Front St with a name similar to Sebastian. The owner played a white grand piano and walked around the restaurant with a big white bird on his arm.

We dined at Le Bec Fin on our first trip in '87. My wife had to go there because she had seen it on "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" with Omar Sharif eating there. We got to know Eva very well over the years. She and Jon treated us to dinner at Le Bec Fin #3 in Simpson Bay about 10 years ago after she announced she was getting out of the restaurant business. We drank about 8 bottles of some very good wine that night.

Someone mentioned Le Perroquet. I remember eating there because someone wanted to try the lion or bear that was on the menu. I was wearing shorts and the owner took me in the kitchen and gave me a pair of pants to put on. He had them hanging from the pot rack.
