Thanks for the interesting article. Only 2 of 138 vehicles fined for not having automobile insurance is actually really good. It's less than 2 percent of the cars they stopped and checked. In the U.S. the number of uninsured drivers on the road at any one time ranges from 12 to 13 percent, and that number remains too high today. So, St. Marten has a leg up on us here.

A lot of that 12 to 13 percent in the US, and it could be higher, are illegals driving without insurance or driver licenses. I know from experience when I travel to my second home in an eastern Washington farming community.

Sammy--The actual percentage of uninsured drivers AND unlicensed drivers in SXM is MUCH higher than this small sample of people getting stopped. I have heard numbers ranging anywhere from 20% to much higher, but you can be assured that the actual percentage is much higher than 2%.

Yikes! Well, at least they caught this guy. For some reason those scooters always flying by make me nervous, and especially on narrow, two-lane island roads! Glad I didn't cut that guy off in the past.

There is never a good reason to cut anybody off. Road rage never turns out good.
