Staying in alegria

Staying in alegria - 05/01/2019 05:30 PM

Hi folks, need some info on staying in Allegria behind the sunset bar. We are looking at a few available for rent units there and just wondering about the level of noise at this complex. I’m talking about the late evening/night time noise from the sunset bar area.
Also, what is the situation with the parking there? Is there an assign parking stall or is it first come first serve?
Thanks!

I would try to find better accommodations. Lots of problems there.

I don't really think there is any late night noise there now. As far as the working of elevators, what the pool looks like, etc., is anyone's guess.. Parking never was assigned parking for the resort, to my knowledge. I don't really think parking should be a problem, since the complex is basically empty..

Problems like what? No power or water? Security issues? Please elaborate.

We were just in SXM, stayed at Beachside Villas. Super location and great hospitality. Former timeshare Alegria owner. Alegria is NOT open...under re-construction, unless you are talking about the Building A , long-term rentals as well as condo/owned. Unsure about that. The former parking lot now monitored by Sunset Bar, requires a parking ticket. You can get a "get out" if you spend some $ at the bar. All of Alegria that I saw wa fenced and under big-time construction, but very little information...

We are not looking for now, we are looking for next year, end of February. Any chances they will be able to complete the Reno’s?

As Panman mentioned the resort is under construction and the amenities previously offered are not available. The owner of the resort does not care about anyone staying there and has been to court several times. There are so many better places to stay that would offer you a much better vacation. The problems there have been ongoing now for a few years and not totally related to the present construction. I cannot see any advantage to staying at Alegria but it is your decision. Just proceed with caution.

If you looking at the building next to Alegria, Bldg 101 I think it is called. Make sure you know what amenities you are getting, ie internet, real TV signal , towel changes etc. Also make sure you know who pays for the parking. Alegria won't let you in for free during the day if you don't have one of their parking passes. I was told it was included, the rental agent said just tell the guy at the entrance gate you staying at Bldg 101. that didn't work, rental agent just gave lame excuses. Anyhow I ended paying $25 for the parking pass for the week. And the rental ended up being through an agent of the agent who rented for the owner. If I knew that up front I wouldn't have made the reservation.

I wouldn't stay there if it was free. The location is fun and I had many great times before he owned it but with the turmoil and lawsuits, I wouldn't bet that it is still there in 2020. Who knows what the owner has planned but at one point I think his hope was to tear it down to build some sort of high end place. A man with money and a dream, just not the research and reality to go with it.

I am editing noting that I was referring to the Hotel portion, and while I wouldn't trust the C Building which likely could be rented off of VRBO or a site like that your odds of it being OK would be better. I would still hesitate.

Thank you guys, I will look somewhere else. It’s just looks like that the prices went up by like 30%... What we were able to rent for $3000.00 now is $4000.00. Plus this ridiculous VRBO/AIRBNB fees on top and I think those fees are more than 10% now. There are a few condos advertised on VRBO and AIRBNB that are in Allegria and they do look nice and have very reasonable rates... I guess if it’s too good to be true than.... well you know.

KGB,

Not saying you should or shouldn't rent there but we were by there many times over our visit the last couple of weeks and during the day it looks pretty sad with all those concrete shells of uncompleted buildings - kind of like a concrete ghetto - and at night, it looks like a ghost town with almost no lights from occupied villas and few cars parked in that area. If the Dunes wasn't there I can't imagine many would go there and the Dunes is NOT a major draw as there are far nicer casinos to visit. And FYI, I have no vested interest in this property - pro or con - and was not one who got burned in past deals there. I just would NOT want to be stuck there when there are so many great properties across the island.

Does it have to be a villa thru VRBO or AirBB? Why not try one of the many resorts that have been restored after hurricane, Divi Little Bay, Belair, Simpson Bay Resorts. Or check on villas in the Orient area. Lots of posters here have stayed in that area with good results.

Re: Staying in alegria - 05/03/2019 05:54 PM

We are “hooked” on the area from Maho to Cupecoy, lol! That’s where we spend 90% of out time. Don’t really care about Orient but we do venture once or twice to Grand Case for dinner. Most of the beach time is between mullet and Baie Ruge stretch. Strategically from this area we can drive in 10-15 min pretty much anywhere we want to including Marigot marina for breakfast or dinner.

We have rented in Porto Cupecoy for 10 night stays in each of the last 5 years and love it. It is in the area you prefer and it offers various size condos, several restaurants, a market, tennis courts, fitness center, and nice pool area. It is also very secure.

We have rented there this February also. The same place is $1500 more next year... I wasn’t able to find anyth8ng for the end of February 2020 that is less than $4000 for two weeks... Like the area a lot!

Look at the classified add at Royal-islander.org

You might find weeks that match what you want. Tough to beat that resort.

Re: Staying in alegria - 05/05/2019 11:31 AM

You might want to check out Beachside Villas(BSV). They are in the area, just past Alegria, yet removed from the noise and hassles of the busier areas. It's a beautiful set up, directly on the beach and wonderful service by the staff. You can contact the owner directly through their website, beachsidevillas.com.

Re: Staying in alegria - 05/05/2019 11:37 AM

Wingman--I might suggest BSV also, but she wants 2 weeks in February for under $4000, and BSV is well over that cost for February.

Mary's Boon - same beach and, like BSV, staff is wonderful.

Re: Staying in alegria - 05/05/2019 02:10 PM

We just spent two weeks at RI Le Plage and it was lovely. My only suggestion, should you happen to be a light sleeper, is make certain the rooms you book are on the Ocean Point/Sonesta side as opposed to the MahoBeach side. The only fault I had with our two weeks was the street noise from constant car horns in the middle of the night, to the revving up suicycles all night long, and worst of all, the garbage trucks going over the speed bumps st 4:30. A.M. And as has already been suggested here, we found very reasonable rentals on the Royal_islander.org site and they were very easy to deal with.

Re: Staying in alegria - 05/05/2019 02:55 PM

At night there is no noise coming from Sunset Beach Bar as it is closed. There are many restaurants in the area and it is very convenient to both Maho market and also airport. 2 casinos within walking distance. The daytime when cruise ships are in port create a large amount of tourists to come to sunset beach bar to watch the planes and dine and drink. The Taxi's and buses are a nuisance but are no reason not to stay there. Construction is going on on the property but shouldn't disturb you if you are in the Ocean side of property.
