Seaweed - 05/23/2019 02:38 AM

I heard the seaweed on orient beach is realy bad (tons of it and smelly). Is it every day? Any report would be appreciated. In the past I recall day to day variance.. Two weeks till touchdown!
Thanks.

It's been pretty consistent for a while, but the beach bars and restaurants that are now operating on Orient Beach rake this stuff up each morning so if you rent chairs and an umbrella at places like Kontiki, Bikini Beach, or Kakao they should be clear. I'm not sure, but I even think Kontiki has a tractor or something similar that cleans the sea grass up each morning. And, the further south you go onto the clothing optional beach the less it becomes.

But the smell is still there depending on wind direction.

Spent three days the last week at Club O beach and had no seaweed issues at all. Didn't step on it, didn't swim with it and didn't smell it.

Currently at OBBR and observe patches of sargassum rolling in daily. Dawn Beach has some fresh deposits every morning.

Dawn Beach is a whole different situation than Orient. Seaweed seems to be an almost constant problem at Dawn Beach.

I can't remember a seaweed free beach since we first visited in 2000. Different amounts from year to year but always some on the north end by Mount Vernon. Some years it would be floating in the water in front of La Playa or Bikini but you could move 20 yards and the water was seaweed free. I never noticed the smell but I figure the way the wind blows on Orient is taking care of that.

We were there 2 weeks ago- spent all of our beach time on the French side so can only speak of that. At that time, the only beach that had any sargasso deposits was Orient and the area by the ferry boat to Pinel (cul-de-sac). On Orient, it was more noticeable toward the Mt. Vernon end- and almost non-existent on the Club O end. The big beach bars (Kontiki, Bikini and Kakao) each morning had staff that raked the deposits into a more pleasing pile away from the front row of chairs. At Orient, it wasn't a ton just enough to need raking and there was no problem with smell. I suspect the area down by Mt. Vernon could get odiferous as it's not maintained and piles up more and more daily on the beach. The Cul-de-sac bay was pretty smelly and it was very thick in the water. Once you got out of it on the way to Pinel- it was no problem at all. Pinel had none, Anse Marcel had none, Grand Case had none, Friar's and Happy had none.
