FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines will soon require all customers traveling to wear a face covering (or mask) while on board the aircraft starting May 11. This new requirement is part of the airline’s ongoing commitment to prioritizing customer and team member well-being in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the use of a simple face covering slows the spread of the virus and helps people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials can be used as a public health measure. Additional details are available on the CDC website. A face covering will be required by each passenger while onboard an American flight. Face coverings may also be required by local jurisdictions. Very young passengers and those with conditions that prevent them from wearing a face covering will be exempt from the requirement.

Earlier this week, American announced that face coverings will be required for flight attendants during every mainline and regional flight beginning tomorrow, May 1. Additionally, American will begin the process of distributing sanitizing wipes and face coverings to customers. This offering will expand to all flights as supplies and operational conditions allow.

“The American Airlines team continues to prioritize the safety of our customers and team members, and requiring a face covering is one more way we can protect those on our aircraft,” said Kurt Stache, Senior Vice President of Customer Experience. “Beginning May 1, we’re provisioning masks and sanitizing wipes for customers on select flights when they board. We will roll this out as quickly as possible and these kits will be widely available across our network in the coming weeks. In the meantime, customers should bring their own masks or face coverings.”

These changes continue to build on American’s commitment to customer and team member safety. American’s cleaning practices have always met or exceeded all guidelines set by the CDC. All American Airlines mainline aircraft and most of its regional aircraft are equipped with High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters. In addition, the cabin air in all American aircraft is changed approximately 15 to 30 times per hour, or once every two to four minutes, similar to the standard for hospitals.

At the airport, American has expanded the frequency of cleaning the areas under its control including gate areas, ticket counters, passenger service counters, baggage service offices and team member rooms. American is also using stanchions to encourage social distancing at gates and ticket counters. Learn more about American’s ongoing commitment to safety at aa.com/coronavirus.

Not sure what world you live in but face coverings is not the norm where I live.

Face masks not available here in Florida, for sure. I have no problem wearing a face mask, if I could buy one.

As long as you can get one with a straw hole.

Here on Long Island NY, or anywhere in NY, if we are in public, face mask or covering of some sort is MANDATORY. I never leave home without a mask, gloves, wipes. It's our life now, like it or not.

A couple months ago I felt scared when I would see poeple with faces covered.

Face covering sounds like maybe some people may opt to use a scarf similar to a type of hijab.

Oh how our world is changing.

American Airlines encouraging face covering 🤔.

Bill's the only one going out, once a week. Face mask is on before he leaves the house and takes it off when he returns home.

Carol masks are available on line. My niece who works at NASA sent me some but they are disposable ones. I made cotton ones using guidelines from Sloan Kettering on line.

Really? A couple people I know tried to order them online -- off one of the hundreds of emails they got about such a thing -- and said they were all out of stock, everywhere they looked. I haven't even bothered to try. I use a scarf.

I have ordered and received both fabric and paper masks.

Be sure and read the reviews before you order. Some are not so good.

Just do what the OH Lt. Governor said to do, cut up and old t-shirt and have your kid make you a mask. If you have a virus, sorry, a t-shirt mask is not going to cut it.

I have three different types of masks on order from online sources. All are in production and scheduled for a mid-May delivery. In the meantime, friends have made me some cloth masks. If you are okay with cloth masks, check zazzle.com. Lots of cute fabrics.

I still had some when Mt St Helens blew and a friend in construction sent me some n95's. Another friend made my wife and I a mask apiece. Hers with flamingos, ya think, and mine a Seahawks. I'm set.

I got mine in Etsy. They took a couple of weeks to arrive, but they were inexpensive and do the trick.

Meaning they make my glasses fog up or they ride up into my eyes if I have my contacts in! 😂

Still good to have them so I can do my bit to keep everyone safe!

I ordered 50 paper masks from Amazon last Sunday and received them in yesterday's mail. I do have prime, which sped the delivery. They were the same disposal type as are in one of my doctor' office.

I ordered a box of 50 from Walmart on April 4, then realized that I should have ordered 2, so ordered another box the next day. The first box took 3 weeks to arrive. The second box has been sitting at a post office in Illinois since April 10! Both showed up on my credit card. Don't expect to see the second box now, so will have to call VISA and remove the $50.00 + from the card.

Carol,

We wear a face mask here when going out. Our employees wear them. Valet, Front Desk, Maintenance etc.
Plus we only go to Publix cause everything is closed! And yes, they wear them in Publix.
Cheers. I think,

Irina--Until you posted this, I totally forgot that you are totally in the bullseye of the virus here in Florida. I apologize that I have not contacted you before this to see how you are. This thing has made us all so concentrated on our own situation. Take care and stay safe.

Re: AA requiring face coverings starting May 11 - 05/03/2020 11:50 AM

Both of our orders made in March from Amazon never made masks. We got nebulous tracking fro China Post and. Hina DHL post. We got pieces of paper in envelopes bagging us not to cancel order. But to Amazon it looked like they delivered packages.

Very frustrating trying to cancelled a non-delivered delivery. Got one credit so far the other still says delivered.

Did get 2000 rubber gloves though.

Thank you. I typed that and have not been back on.
Yes Scuba, here in the Epicenter it is mandatory when you are out and about.
I believe that the airplane, with the recycled air and the proximity of seating, would be the place that face masks would be mandatory.
Glad it’s safe where you are

Curious as to why you ordered 2000 rubber gloves. Unless you take them off and throw them away every time you touch something, they're of no use whatsoever.

Re: AA requiring face coverings starting May 11 - 05/04/2020 11:44 PM

Correct. I have personally witnessed some really disgusting gloves being worn in the grocery, including FILTHY garden gloves. I have also seen MANY gloves just thrown on the ground in parking lots.

Re: AA requiring face coverings starting May 11 - 05/05/2020 02:36 AM

We use rubber surgical gloves for cleaning guns, gardening, pumping gas, working on house projects, painting and handling meats and fish. Also for pushing carts while shopping but never throw them on a parking lot ground. They go into the receptical in truck and then trash can at home.
