** Billy Folly Road Drainage Project completed **
The Honorable Minister of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment & Infrastructure, Mr. Egbert Doran, hereby informs the general public of the completion of the drainage project on the Billy Folly Road in Pelican.
Over the years, the area developed into a popular tourist destination with the establishment of various resorts, hotels, bars and restaurants. With any heavy rainfall, a large pool of water used to settle in the area of Atrium Hotel and Baker’s Suites. This situation forced pedestrians to maneuver around the pool of settling water and risked being splashed by motorists. This became a major issue for residents, visitors and business owners alike.
As the Ministry is responsible for the management, maintenance and development of the physical infrastructure of the country, the project was aimed to eliminate the settling of excess water due to heavy rainfall in the mentioned area by installing a drainage pipe in front of the Atrium Hotel and connecting the pipe to the existing trench on The Corner Road.
The project began on June 15, 2020 after the lockdown due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
On Friday, August 14, 2020 Minister Doran, accompanied by a support staff, visited the site on the Billy Folly Road, where they met with staff of the Department of Infrastructure Management and the contractor. Fortunately, there was heavy rainfall in the morning hours giving the Minister and those present the opportunity to witness that there is no longer of settling rainwater.
Minister Doran applauded the staff at the Department of Infrastructure Management and the contractor for their diligence in ensuring the completion of this project in view of the safety of our community and visitors. The Minister would like to thank the community at large for their patience and tolerance, and assures that he remains committed to the people of Sint Maarten.

They dug a long trench path and buried big pipes for the the water to flow. We have have had a lot of rain now for the past two weeks and no flooding.

I think it’s great that the problem is finally resolved.

Maybe their next stop might be to take their expertise and head over to the Beacon Hill area and take care of the road just as you turn left past the Alegria property and the casino exit and follow the road past the airport runway towards El Zafiro and Beachside Villas. I’m not sure if that’s White Sands or not but the slightest rainfall causes that area to experience major flooding, dangerous to motorists and walkers alike.
