Airtransat 2021 - 10/27/2020 02:36 AM

I just checked our flight in January with airtransat. It says cancelled. No notice so far. You can't book a flight there at all with them. Calling tomorrow for refund. It said refundable up to 24 hrs before flight time. So on to westjet. So far they are flying there.

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see SXM anywhere on their list of destinations .....interesting

There are no flights now. We booked in August & apparently the flight was cancelled yesterday. And I just got off the phone with them & our tickets were only refundable if we cancelled. She checked with supervisor & we are only entitled to voucher that doesn't expire. Well isn't that special! I said but you aren't providing the service we paid for. They didn't care. We do have the vouchers she says. Well yippee. Unhappy beyond words.

That is kinda bass akwards....shouldn't the refund be a given if THEY cancel your flight?

One would think so but perhaps the laws are different in Canada?

Yes, from my understanding, it is a US FAA rule that airlines must refund the price on any flights they cancel. FAA rules do not apply to flights which do not go through the US.

This is for the US ONLY but this is the DOT policy on refunds for cancelled flights.

CANCELLED US FLIGHT REFUNDS

And below is the Canada version. It gets a little confusing with regard to situations/cancellations and what is within the control of the airline and what is not.

CANADA TRANSPORTATION

This was "modified" 2019-12-09 but I could not find anything newer.

The FAA is a division within the DOT, no big deal.

Swoop airlines did this to me with trying to fly from Toronto to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. They cancelled my flight and would only give us a voucher. I called MasterCard Canada, which is the card I paid for the flights with and opened a dispute as they had cancelled the flight. I think it was called a failure to provide services. I provided the emails from the booking and the email that Swoop had sent me cancelling my flight. It took almost 2 months but I got all my money back. You might want to call the credit card company that you used to book the flight and see what your options are Jeepers.

Yes, it is definitely a failure to provide services. Good suggestion. Hope you are able to get your money back, Jeepers.

Air Canada is negotiating to buy Transat. The deal last fall for $18/share has been nixed and replaced by $5/share, but the deal is not yet complete
In Canada, airlines have been giving vouchers not refunds. Only recently has WestJet said yes to refunds. Air Canada continues to say not to refunds, just vouchers
Hard to imagine AC will buy Transat @ $5/share if Transat gives refunds and AC continues to not give refunds
Also Cdn airlines have been asking for more government help, but given lots of people are upset over no refunds, a political move to further help airlines who are keeping customer money will not be a popular move for the government.

Jeepers it’s still considered a refusal of services here in Canada. They don’t like to tell use that and I’m sure Swoop airlines here in Canada wasn’t happy with having to return my money. The credit card company just wanted to see proof they the actual airline cancelled the flight, not me.

WESTJET is having a sale until October 31. Prices to SXM from Toronto under $600 return.

I just checked Westjet's sale price. For April 8 to 15, price was $950 for 2 return.

Going to book westjet. Going for one more phone call to airtransat for refund. We have emailed our ombudsman as well.
Love westjet & only reason for airtransat we liked arrival day & times arriving & departing. Never again. So disappointed in their attitude.
Still hope to get there.
