Trip Report Days 5-7

Trip Report Days 5-7 - 11/23/2020 01:01 PM

Day 5- We usually pick one day, to do a little shopping and hopefully it's the one rainy day we normally get. Unfortunately (fortunately) there was no rain day this trip so today was it. Given the current lack of visitors, street parking was easy to find within a block of Front Street. Walked down the boardwalk coming from the terminal and stopped at the first place open at 9am which was the Holland House Hotel for a cocktail as we waited for the shops to open. Shopping was done by 11:30 with my wife finding a few shiny objects to purchase and me making a stop at Gulmohar's for some single malt scotch and bourbons to bring home. Lunch was purchased from Grape Wine in Hope Estates. Brie with mustard and french sausage with baguette made a perfect light lunch. The Grape Wine Shop has become a regular stop for us due to their incredible selection of cheeses, cured meats and wide assortment of other gourmet items. Dinner was at La Piment in Orient Bay Village. Dinner was excellent! I had the sea scallops over a tiger prawn risotto that was mouth watering. Maria had Gnocchi with burrata that was equally good. Great service and another exceptional meal!

Day 6- We went to Friars Bay Beach for the day and were not disappointed. No waves, blue sky and no crowds......perfect! Lunch was Salmon tartar served with a salad and fries. We both have been really impressed with the quality of food the beach bar restaurants even though we expected it. Dinner was at Le Telegraphe in Orient Bay Village. First time at this restaurant for us and another good choice! I had the fish special which was a taragon encrusted wahoo over roasted vegetables and Maria had the pork tenderloin over mashed potatoes. Both meals were again incredible both in taste and presentation. We shared a tiramisu for dessert which was very good but not a normal tiramisu. It had graham cracker crumble crust on top but was very tasty.

Day 7- We had seen the signs that Kontiki Beach was due to open today so we wanted to give it a try. Comfortable chairs with cushions for $20 euro, I had the Green Curry Coconut Shrimp which was very very good! A little delayed spicy kick that was a nice combination of heat and flavors. Maria had the veal carpaccio and was not disappointed.
Dinner was another brie, sausage and baguette day which was a great way to finish off the week.

In 30 years of vacationing together we've always fantasized about extending our vacation as the end of the trip nears but unfortunately we never do. This year was different! We justified it by finding a place to stay in Orient Bay for half the normal rental and changed our flights to go home the day after Thanksgiving.

Here's a couple pictures of the Wahoo and Coconut Curry Shrimp.

To be continued!

Sounds lovely. TY for sharing your experiences. The only time we ever got to extend our stay was not as enjoyable as we were at the airport waiting to board and hours later they finally cancelled our flight and rescheduled us for a 7 a.m. departure the next morning. Your decision in changing your plans sounds awesome to me. Enjoy!

Thanks everyone for the well wishes!

Jerry, I try to bring home things I can't readily get at home but know I like. This trip I'm bringing 3 scotches home: Glenfarclas Cask Strength, 12 year old Caol Ila and Isle of Jura Superstition. My wife and I tend to like the Islay or Speyside scotches best. I am bringing a bourbon back for my son, a Buffalo Trace product called Stagg. Besides their scotch selection, the bourbons are well represented at Gulmohar's. Several Blanton's iterations along with other hard to find Buffalo Trace products.

Springbank 12 year old cask strength is still my favorite and what we chose to drink while on the island along with some16 year old Lagavulin as an alternative.

Cheers!
