French side numbers not good

French side numbers not good - 08/20/2021 01:17 PM

Daily Herald story

Don't think the numbers of active cases in that story are correct, but regardless they are not good.

But something is amiss in this statement, for sure... "As of August 17, some 11,215 persons have received their first vaccination and 8,576 received their second injection for a total 19,791. About 32.92 per cent of the population has received at least one dose of the vaccine. Vaccination coverage of the population as a whole stand at 41.86 per cent. " Huh??

The Daily Herald story is taken from yesterday’s weekly St Martin/St Barth COVID status update, but they have only used a portion of it.

The lower number of 32.82% is the % of people age 12+ who have been vaccinated. The higher number of 41.86% is the % of people age 18+ who have been vaccinated, which was the metric used when only 18+ were eligible for the vaccine. When the vaccine was approved for 12+ they added a new metric, but continue to report the 18+ metric,

You are correct that the Worldometers active case number is incorrect. The number of new French side cases per week, as bad as it is, would have to be 2-3 times higher than it is for the Worldometers number to be accurate. There were 251 new cases on the French side last week, and 236 new cases the week before. Those numbers are higher than the Dutch side (233 and 204 new cases for the same weeks), but not hugely different. I would expect the number of active French side cases to track a lot closer to the Dutch side number than Worldometers’ number,

OK, thanks for the clarification. I knew the French side numbers for active cases could not be basically 4 times the number of new cases for the week, as that makes no sense. And duh, if they are going to quote from something, they should read what they are quoting, to see if it makes sense!

Could it be that unmasked protests on the French side had anything to do with the current spike in active cases? Large numbers of unmasked people gathered together to protest on the French side lately.

I really don't think it's protests per se, just a low level of mask wearing in general.

That and large party gatherings.
