Mosquitos

I have not heard anyone mention or complain about bugs at all. We are booked for late October/early November at The Belair where my wife and daughter have had constant bites and it tends to be the only detraction from a fabulous time. Despite no reports on TTOL I do see what looks lots of bugs flying around the Holland House webcam. What are others experiencing?

We have been here for 11 days. I haven't even thought about it. I probably have seen one or two but don't know that I have one bite. And they often feast on me.......because I am so sweet

What is has always been weird is that I can go an entire two week trip and not get one bite and my poor wife gets bit immediately. They say something to do with blood chemistry or something.

No mosquitoes that I can report on.

I always get constant bites, regardless of the season and Eric never gets bit. One of the 'costs' of visiting SXM.

Not drinking enough. Lol

Our last February mosquito travails at Cupecoy Beach Club are documented on here. My dh (dear husband) got zero bites but dd (dear daughter) and I (me, myself , and I) got divebombed and stung without mercy. It was a war but yes, for those of us with sweet skin, gotta pack the DEET.

There are a few mosquitoes here in our unit at BSV, but we’re not getting bitten nearly as much as in prior trips to the island. The high winds probably has something to do with it.

We start taking vitamin B a few weeks before we come and throughout our stay. Must make a difference.

Our first unit over here at GCBC had a fairly aggressive bug problem, but that may have been more a function of architecture, being virtually surrounded by walls. I do seem to attract a more pacificist version of no see ums--my shins and ankles get bitten but only itch briefly. My wife has a mild mosquito issue, but not a no see um issue. Not really a big issue, or reason to stay inside for us.

We were on island at BSV for two weeks in April and not a mosquito did I see. On the other hand, my dear husband got eaten alive most evenings if he failed to put lotion on. We had none in our villa but in the late afternoon at the pool if the breezes died down they seemed to magically appear. Thank goodness most days it was very breezy.

For years I tended to confuse the dreaded moskies with the almost invisible ‘no-see-ums’ that are everywhere in our experience. You don’t see them or hear them and you only realize their presence when you start to itch, usually in the areas from ankles to knees and pretty soon thereafter you break out with little welts in the itchy areas. These little buggers usually attack me in the late afternoons and can happen anywhere - the beach (sand fleas maybe?), the pool deck and even in restaurants.

We always bring the Off Mosquito Wipes with us wherever we go jic. They do seem to work.

I agree--this is the experience we had in April.
The weather was a little cool and windy to sit outside as much as usual.

It's funny that people are still mentioning the wind in sxm, and it is still blowing like crazy here in Connecticut!

Flamingo has a pretty aggressive approach. Weekly spraying.

We don't normally have any issues with mosquitos but dusk and dawn times is when they tend to be more noticeable so make sure doors and windows are closed then for sure. We stay at Mary's Boon most of the time and they have a person fog the entire property at dusk twice which makes a big difference.

Also.....our experience has been that ground floor accommodations have more of an issue than elevated ones (for obvious reasons). We have stayed in both and it's one reason I like being on the fourth floor. Makes it easier to use the balcony in the morning and evening.

CaribLee--also, if there is vegetation directly around those ground floor accommodations, mosquitoes tend to be even worse. We always tried to avoid ground floor at Royal Palm, for those reasons.

Carol....that is true.

You might find that different at Royal Palm as the have the same spray regiment as Flamingo.
