Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/14/2022 09:51 AM

There are computer models having a tropical storm passing right over SXM. 96L invest is 900 miles east of SXM heading west. Friday will have the system closer to SXM with a clearer forecast if it is a threat to the Leeward islands.

Re: Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/15/2022 12:59 PM

Latest from NHC

"A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for...
* Saba and St. Eustatius
* St. Maarten
* Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, and Anguilla

A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are
possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.

Interests elsewhere in the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin
Islands, Puerto Rico, and Hispaniola should monitor the progress of
this system. Additional tropical storm watches or warnings will
likely be required for portions of these areas later today."

Those of you on island, be especially careful Friday and Saturday and make plans to stay pretty close to home.

Re: Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/15/2022 01:26 PM

Please let this just be more than a little rain and wind but nothing too treacherous.
Posted By: Carol_Hill

Re: Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/15/2022 02:56 PM

11 am advisory--Tropical Storm WARNING for St. Maarten. Tropical Storm WATCH for St. Martin. OK, kinda weird.

According to Storm Carib, closest point of approach is at 10 AM on Saturday morning, at a distance of 60 miles. Be careful out there folks!

Re: Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/15/2022 03:26 PM

We’re currently staying at the Flamingo Beach resort. The skies are cloudy and the surf is a little rougher than yesterday but nothing more at the moment. We are scheduled to leave back to Dallas on Sunday, so we’re watching the weather closely for further developments. Hopefully the island is spared of anything harsh and we can leave on schedule. We’ve had a wonderful week so we have nothing to complain about. This is our first visit but we look forward to many more in the future!

Re: Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/15/2022 04:02 PM

Glad you are enjoying yourselves. Hopefully you should be OK to leave on time on Sunday. Those expecting to leave on Saturday may have problems.

Just be CAREFUL on Saturday, and don't drive through any standing water.

Re: Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/15/2022 07:02 PM

It looks like Friday afternoon will be the beginning of this storm and should move away Saturday afternoon?
Puerto Rico looks to be in the track and hopefully it will recurve and go out to sea.
Recent models show Fiona tracking further south but SXM is going to get flooding rain and stormy weather.
Posted By: Carol_Hill

Re: Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/15/2022 11:26 PM

5 PM advisory has the storm up to 60 mph and tropical storm warning now issued for St. Martin also.

Stay safe everyone!

Re: Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/16/2022 12:57 PM

The latest from this morning is that the winds are at 50 mph. They were 60 at one point yesterday, so that is good. The latest from Storm Carib has Fiona a little further away from SXM than predicted yesterday, with closest point of approach being 110 miles away, at 10:24 Saturday morning.

Everyone on island, stay safe and check in when you can!

Elaine--makes sense. Hopefully everyone does stay off the roads. Sounds like there won't be anyplace to go anyway after 5 pm on the Dutch side anyway.

Take care and stay safe!

Re: Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/16/2022 02:30 PM

cruzer--I'm surprised they even have chairs out, especially since you said there were so few people staying there. I assume they will be putting them away early today.

Stay safe!

Re: Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/16/2022 03:28 PM

They won't! duh

We're getting pretty cloudy here in Cupecoy, but it's still bright and sunny. Had a nice 10 minute downpour 20 mins ago, brought the temp down a bit and brought a nice breeze. Opened up the house to blow out the curry aroma from last night!

Re: Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/16/2022 08:26 PM

Elaine,

Planning on where to eat already for next year's visit.
While the only Indian food we have eaten on the island is at Jai's, we might have to put your place on our list.

Wishing you a safe few days, always thinking of you both in the SXM family.

So far today we've had sun, main, clouds over and over. It's getting closer, my windows just blew shut! And lovely sunshine.

Re: Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/17/2022 12:03 PM

Latest from the NHC says the storm was south of where they thought it was and it has gone past the closest point of approach, so hopefully the worst is over there. Hopefully just some rain for the cisterns.

Re: Tropical Storm Fiona - 09/17/2022 03:09 PM

Hoping the worse of the storm stays away and minor flooding is as bad as it gets. Can’t help but wonder what Lake Mullet and White Sands Lake, to name but a few spots, are like today since minimal rain usually causes maximum issues in both places. And those but a few normal trouble spots.
The big thing is people stay safe.

You mentioned you hoped they (GCBC) would remove he beach chairs soon, BillandfElaine stated they won't, and I said they did.

The chairs are still stowed, it continues to rain, and we head to Mary's boon later today. Too bad The Palms is closed for vacation--I'll miss the drunken ribs.
