Orient Beach Today

Orient Beach Today - 01/28/2023 12:20 AM

OMG, this is our 21st trip and we have never seen sargassum as bad as it was today. It’s usually worse at the north end of the beach, but not today. Club O was just as bad as Mont Vernon. The Sargassum removal machine was on the beach, but at the rate he was cleaning it up, it would probably take at least a month. 🥲

Yuk. And the French government was looking into a solution on this for the Atlantic facing beaches. Island time.

Not sure there is a man made solution to the problem. As we descended into SXM last week you could see for miles all over the open ocean ribbons of seaweed. Unless you can change ocean currents I don't see a practical solution. They are using 2 different ways to remove it from the beach. First one is using a tractor with a rake this method makes piles of sand and seaweed that have to spread out. Second method is a tractor pulling a metal conveyer that removes the seaweed from the sand and collects to to be dumped by the big rock. This is a much better looking beach although not perfect. What I don't get is that they use this machine on the beach by Boo Boo Jams that hardly anyone uses.

Want to be a Billionaire? Find a (profitable) use for Sargassum seaweed.

We were in Roatan, Honduras last year, lots of sargassum. They spread it on their vegetation as fertilizer.

Maybe that's done:
Green Science Alliance develops 100% bio-plastic with sargassum
It's certainly a use, not sure about the profitable part though...
Dave.
