An ode to Neil Rooney - 07/02/2023 07:55 PM
Sitting here savoring my fix of grouper fingers at the Yacht Club, thought I’d piggyback on recent post about Neil. As the Carly Simon song “nobody does it better” goes , Neil you created some of my best venues and memories of SXM. Peg Leg, Buccaneer, Yacht Club and the original SSBB , they were the best. Truly a great legacy…Dave

So much fun at those places back then. Yacht Club I believe was called Spinnakers (sp?) back then.

I lernt at his bars, you don't need a cash register that uses electricity, if you have a problem with a web cam you have to fix it yourself, a pirate can dance without wearing his peg leg, you can get free beer while trying to chat up a lady, English lessons are taught, etc.

I will add to the ode. We were newbee's to the island and fell in love, buying a home 1 year later. This was 2003, so Sunset was already not a fun place. Since we went in low season, we spent a bit of time at BBB and we got to spend some time with the Bartender (Curtis, a life long friend, Bill is Godfather to his eldest daughter) and this guy that hung around when it was quiet. The owner Neil. I can't tell you how much help in our quest to move to the island he provided, sitting at the bar. Taxes? Cargo? he knew it all. Between Neil and Barbara, we really had no surprises when the time came. Fifteen years on we're we're still here. Thank you Neil
