Elaine--I'm sure that's true with regard to locals, but not visitors. Hopefully this will be just a rain event, although the winds seem to be amping up a lot. Best wishes. Stay safe!

Re: Now Hurricane Tammy - 10/19/2023 01:39 PM

So Sxmmartini when I posted about 94L my post was not that much of a crap,
like you stated.May be because as a local I have, unfortunately, acquired some knowledge, and I could see that L94, now Tammy has gormed more or less where Luis did.

Re: Now Hurricane Tammy - 10/19/2023 02:22 PM

They closed the airport for 1 day when Philippe passed through. I wonder if the airport will be closed on Saturday?
Posted By: sxmmartini

Re: Now Hurricane Tammy - 10/19/2023 02:28 PM

Look not sure what your point is but whether a local or a tourist does not matter. If anyone is on SXM during a storm and not checking the NHC which I am sure they are not this will gives them a heads up to prepare.
Posted By: enzosxm

Re: Now Hurricane Tammy - 10/19/2023 03:50 PM

My point is that before you label anybody post "CRAP" try to read it, as my objective was exactly to inform people, either be tourists or locals, that there might have been a chance of sxm getting hit or brushed by what was, almost a week ago, 94L.

Re: Now Hurricane Tammy - 10/19/2023 04:26 PM

As if I wasn't nervous enough about flying I'm reading all these reports about Tammy. We are suppose to arrive from NY on Saturday.

Best wishes, Louise! Keep us informed.

Re: Now Hurricane Tammy - 10/19/2023 04:32 PM

Sunday would be a better day to travel. It is worth your frequent flier miles or fee to change your ticket now before they close the airport and all flights get backed up. IMHO
Posted By: Carol_Hill

Re: Now Hurricane Tammy - 10/19/2023 04:37 PM

Yes, I would check to see if you can switch to a Sunday arrival.

Here is the latest from Storm Carib, as far as closest point of approach.

"Results for St.Maarten/St.Martin (18.05N, 63.12W):
The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 18.3N, 62.5W or about 45.8 miles (73.8 km) from your location. The estimated time of when the center of the storm will be at that location is in about 53 hours and 1 minute from now (Saturday, October 21 at 5:36PM AST)."

Thank you Sxmmartini, no problem. As per regard of Fabila's trip unless there is a sudden change of directions regarding Tammy, I see it very difficultthat PJIA will be open saturday.

Reporting here, live, on the ground from beautiful BSV. Current conditions, sunny and clear, we can still even see Saba and a bit more wind. While yesterday, our arrival day was nice and calm, especially the waves, today the waves are pretty rough with more wind. Waiting for Fabila and Coulor1 for their arrival, Plane enroute according to Flightaware. PamJ and Dwayne waiting for their Miami flight to depart.

Tammy is now a hurricane. Stay safe everyone!

Re: Now Hurricane Tammy - 10/20/2023 03:11 PM

Most worrisome the sudden drop of pressure down to 992mb, and slow moving now down to only 6 nautical miles per hour from 14 of 24/36 hours
ago. Hopefully the trough north of it will be weak enough to shift Tammy consistently to the North.

Has the surf reached the back stairs yet? That’s when I start to get more than just a little nervous.

Hi Everybody!

Long time lurker here, just wanted to share a channel on YouTube, Mr Weatherman, who gives very specific Caribbean reports - this one is his latest from 2 hours ago.

Best of luck to all those are on the island, I hope it passes quickly by with just some needed rain. Will be on the island in a couple of weeks.

Good morning Pat. It's 7:15 AM and looking outside, you'd never know there's a hurricane coming. I'm at the Sonesta with a couple of others from my group and the rest of the group are at the Travelers Inn. BSV were leaving nothing to chance and had us move by 5PM yesterday. The staff had everything tightened down and made all the necessary hurricane precautions they could. When I awoke yesterday morning and periodically during the day, the waves were hitting the steps to the deck. When I woke this morning, my first thought was that the hurricane had already passed us. But I've been reading that's not the case. It's mostly cloudy, with patches of sunshine and less wind than yesterday. The view from the 7th floor, looks like the water is not as choppy as yesterday.

Re: Now Hurricane Tammy - 10/21/2023 12:52 PM

Results from Storm Carib this morning.

"Results for St.Maarten/St.Martin (18.05N, 63.12W):
The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 18.3N, 62.7W or about 32.5 miles (52.3 km) from your location. The estimated time of when the center of the storm will be at that location is in about 24 hours and 3 minutes from now (Sunday, October 22 at 8:54AM AST)."

Based on the above, I don't think the airport will be opening at 9 AM on Sunday.

Mike, thanks so much for checking in!

I'm happy BSV is playing it safe and moved all of you to a safe location.

Stay in touch, if you can, and we will be praying for all of SXM !

Re: Now Hurricane Tammy - 10/21/2023 02:53 PM

During tropical storm Philippe a few weeks ago, the waves were hitting the BSV building on and off most of the day. Vicky closed the huricane shutters except for a small area on the side shutters. Tammy is obviously a much bigger threat. Glad everyone is moved out to higher ground. Take care.

Re: Now Hurricane Tammy - 10/21/2023 03:19 PM

Just a note that the Hurricane Watch Net radio broadcast (https://hwn.org/ for schedule etc.) is a source of information if there is a power/internet outage AND you have a (battery powered) shortwave radio (14.325 MHz (USB) and if propagation dictates 7.268.00 MHz (LSB)). Having said that if you are a shortwave listener or radio amateur you probably already know this but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Hoping for the best and that Tammy drifts off into the ocean somewhere very soon.
Dave.

Re: Now Hurricane Tammy - 10/22/2023 10:50 AM

Looks like we dodged a bullet. The storm is currently 60 northeast which is the closest it will get to SXM. Most of the stronger winds accompanying the storm are east of its center, sparing SXM worse conditions. It’s cloudy with intermittent showers and winds are 15-35 mph. Looking like just a sideswipe. We’re in the Dawn Beach area which looks none the worse for wear. Also, hat tip to TwentySix whose recommendation of Mr. Weatherman on YouTube was spot on. His forecasts were infinitely better and more Caribbean-centric to anything I else I saw. Island by island information was most helpful.
