Bruce S posted an AMAZING shot of a non-confirmed mountain
We have two guesses in on that picture in Thread 4

On this thread Sunnykm is up for the next picture post

However to get back on track whoever - Sunnykm or the BruceS winner is confirmed they can post the next picture
on this thread that is the one we will go with.

Remember only one pic in the game at a time.

Cypress Point Golf Club?
Posted By: Sunnykm

Re: Game time part three - 08/10/2020 11:29 PM

Travel Hat got it first!! Favorite place in California for hubby and I. Lone Cypress is held up with cables after a pretty windy storm a few years ago. Beautiful photo spot, in fact, took a while to find one without us in it.

We went to visit Carmel in June to celebrate our anniversary. Played Pacific Grove Golf Links (terrific public course--back nine on the water) Pebble Beach had just reopened and we spent the entire day there watching the golfers finish out on 18. Gorgeous day! Perfect weather and fantastic Greyhounds (cheers!).

BTW in my photo here on TTOL, the water in the background is Monterey Bay smile

I remember when I first saw the building
I was staying in this city, but working in a shipyard 35 miles north
Of course one day after work I stopped half way to buy some waterproof boots

Fun place
I will defer for awhile
give some of the new folks a chance
Of course i did drop a hint or two

Re: Game time part three - 08/11/2020 02:43 PM

Yes, it is in the U.S. it is coastal and can been seen from a boat.

It is not a lighthouse.

Re: Game time part three - 08/11/2020 03:29 PM

looks like a warer tower
Posted By: TRIM

Re: Game time part three - 08/11/2020 03:44 PM

It is a water tower, built in 1937.
Posted By: TomB

Re: Game time part three - 08/11/2020 05:24 PM

on the far right side looks like a silhouette of a palm tree
So if it is a water tower
located in the USA
I am going with it is on an island (maybe in the Keys) in Florida
Posted By: Carol_Hill

Re: Game time part three - 08/11/2020 05:41 PM

Good eyes there, Tom! The original poster lives in Charleston, and there ARE some palm trees there, you know! smile
Posted By: TRIM

Re: Game time part three - 08/11/2020 05:57 PM

Good eye for sure. Those are palm trees. Not close to Charleston. It is on an island, or should we say a key.....but not those keys.
Posted By: TomB

Re: Game time part three - 08/11/2020 06:05 PM

Of course in my best Charleston typing dialect...
No monstrosity like that would dare be seen in Charlesssston...
We make our towers out brick...

Most of my family is from Richmond so I know...

Favorite line from the movie 1776 when NC delegate rose to vote on the declaration of independence
North Carolina just a small column humility between two pillars of conceit votes Aye!
VA and SC go hand in hand and do not think you will see a water tower like that.

So know we need to narrow it down.
Trim (50/50 Chance) I am going to say it is on the.... Gulf Side
Yes or No we will now know what side it is on.
Posted By: TRIM

Re: Game time part three - 08/11/2020 06:28 PM

Gulf side is correct.

The water tower is sitting just outside of the restaurant, up the hill maybe 50 yards. I am sure several people have eaten there, and will recognize the landmark.
Posted By: TomB

Re: Game time part three - 08/11/2020 06:53 PM

Well I was going to guess Captiva, but for the life of me I do not remember any hills
Posted By: TRIM

Re: Game time part three - 08/11/2020 07:08 PM

I stayed at Captiva the night before I took this picture. No hills on Captiva that any larger than a sand bunker. The hill I am referring to is a Florida hill, elevation of 15 to 20 ft. You are narrowing in, but if you don’t recognize it now, you aren’t going to guess it without google at the 18 hour mark.

Re: Game time part three - 08/11/2020 07:55 PM

That’s funny. Tom will have to make that call. I would think phoning a friend is worth the effort, but if you just texted, that is too easy.
One more clue before Beerman gets it. This place is rumored to be the inspiration for a cheeseburger song. Of course as you travel the Caribbean, there are several places with similar claims.
Name it Beerman.
Posted By: BEERMAN

Re: Game time part three - 08/11/2020 08:00 PM

Parents had a place close to there....Cabbage Key?
Posted By: TRIM

Re: Game time part three - 08/11/2020 08:35 PM

That’s it. Cabbage Key is in the sound end of Charlotte Harbor, just off of Pine Island. The restaurant is very popular and can only be reached by boat. Supposedly Jimmy Buffett’s Cheeseburger in Paradise was inspired by or written at Cabbage Key. The water tower shown in the picture is a well known landmark for Cabbage Key. I wish I had taken a picture of it in the day light, but the night time picture with the moon was just too cool.

Beerman, you are up.

I was lucky enough to have a teacher that truly got me excited about two places... Malta and Lake Titicaca
I have been to Malta (and loved it) Not sure I will make it but I would love to go to Lake Titicaca.
Thanks for the Advice!

So where to now you ask...

Next is a set of very famous doors, albeit no longer used as an entrance.

I am sure everyone knows about what lies on the other side and have probably passed through these doors via the written word or by watching a movie.

Good Guess - Wrong City

BTW - not sure where she is now and hopefully will not be upset that I posted her pic... but she was real excited 9 years ago

No it is not Typhoid Mary Birthplace

So we now know...
- That the doors are not England
- You can hear bells
- A very strange view from the window
- The resident died of Typhoid or Typhus
- They did not die alone
- And the bookcase is the key...

Where could these doors be????

Oh yeah - One resident did survive

I have attached another hint - look carefully, but do not think it will help immediately.

After the germ goes away and travel is once again permissible, I highly recommend Amsterdam.
Great Museums, Great Food, Some of the nicest people in the world.
I particularly like going in the middle of winter when the tourists are at a minimum.

Make reservations and do not skip the Anne Frank Huis!

Re: Game time part three - 08/13/2020 02:58 PM

We actually have been there, Tom. It was in the 80s, and just for one day, in Amsterdam itself. We went to the Anne Frank House, but we went to Holland mostly for the tulips. We also went to southern Germany and a couple of other places. Unfortunately, all my pictures from there are slides, which I guess someday I should pay to get put on disc. I have no idea how much that stuff costs.

Re: Game time part three - 08/13/2020 03:00 PM

Re: Game time part three - 08/13/2020 03:05 PM

Carol,

Best Buy (Amazon) sell a reasonable slide copier that you stick the slide in a slot and it saves it to a JPEG that can be transferred.
Idiots delight for sure, but that is how I have captured most of my old pics into digital format.

They are not the quality to blow up into large pictures, but fine for digital posting and kindling great memories
The key is that the slides have been saved in a dry cool space...
Basements are not necessarily good for the longevity of slides

Some hook directly to a computer and some save to a SD card or some type of media.
It is a pain in the butt, but addictive once you start
Pay attention to your naming conventions.
The one I have automatically resets when you turn it off.
It will start with IMG-001 and when you turn it off and then start again later it will reset with the slide name as IMG-001 when you turn it back on.

EllenS - You are very close to where the picture was taken, but I think you can get closer...

BTW one of my personal favorite shots I have taken is of the lighthouse on Campobello Island

Ministers Island. I remembered that pic in your blog and found it! That lighthouse pic is PERFECT!
Posted By: TomB

Re: Game time part three - 08/15/2020 01:34 PM

Beerman you are correct! EllenS was soooooooooooo close.

Indeed it is Ministers Island just off the shore near St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada. It was a getaway for Sir William Cornelius Van Horne, KCMG. Who was American-born who built Canadian trans-continental railway. The island is only reachable twice a day for a short period depending on the tides of the Bay Fundy.

Here is a link to our blog Northern Adventure that Carol and Beerman mentioned.

You are up Beerman.... Sorry EllenS frown

Wow. I wasn't sure. The picture was not quite clear enough to tell if that was the palm trees and mansion on the top. I am kind of surprised that I beat all of the sailors on here. Maybe they spend too much time in the BVI. Little St James, just off of St Thomas.

Ok, here is my picture.

Ellen we walked into Lauterbrunnen with backpacks on and NO reservation. Lucked out and found a room at the Hotel Oberland, they actually closed for the season the day we checked out! Where did you stay when you were there? We do want to go back, perhaps stay in Murren next time? we hiked down from Murren...

We stayed in Murren. And loved it. Did a bunch of hiking up there. The name of the hotel escapes me right now but you felt like you were hanging over the valley. The day we were leaving the clouds came in and we were in it. We were there October 2016. Loved Switzerland. Those cows and their bells. It was like a symphony.

Carol - you are correct

Casa de las Conchas (House of Shells) was built around 1500.
The builder was a Knight in Order of Santiago de Compostela
The shells are symbols of the Order - There are 300+ on the building.
He was also a professor at the University of Salamanca, which is the third oldest in the world.

Also where I attend a summer program in 1972 that changed my life.
If you are bored here is a rewind our blog returning to city 40+ years later Por Fin Volvemos
