Turks and Caicos - 04/12/2016 08:23 PM

Hey there - just curious if anyone has any good tips on cool places to stay in the T&C - am thinking of venturing there later this year...

Thanks!

We very highly recommend Grace Bay Club and Seven Stars on Provo. Have stayed at both and they're great!

Best regards,

If you're looking for something more economical than those high end resorts (yes, they are lovely, I know) try a VRBO option in that area. We stayed in a lovely VRBO unit in the Turtle Cove area and had a fantastic time. I've got a trip report on here somewhere from our trip a couple years ago.

That is an option I have considered Sugaree - I would love to read your TR.

There's a link to it. Although, now with the debacle of VRBO charging a fee on top of the rent, you might want to find another method of renting, but still a good idea.

Thanks for posting your review - the VRBO deal is not looking quite as sweet as some others now that the fees are applied - looking forward to my trip later this year, thanks to your review

If you would like to try a mid-priced place to stay, the Ocean Club is very nice. Nothing real fancy, but the beach in front of it is fantastic. There is also it's sister place, Ocean Club West, but we have never stayed at this place.

Thanks - after some extensive digging I am looking at the Sands at Grace Bay and Royal West Indies - just watching the fare fluctuate each day - my trip will be at the end of October...I will check out the Ocean Club

I have stayed at Ocean Club West and Sands at Grace Bay. The rooms at Sands are more luxurious (granite, etc.) but I like the pool layout and beach better at Ocean Club West. It is clearly a personal choice thing, but I like the beachy feel at Ocean Club West. Having said that, I wouldn't complain at all if I was invited to return to Sands at Grace Bay.

We too will be in Provo the end of October for a coupe of weeks. And, as I said, we are staying once again at Ocean Club. The people that work there are the best. The pools are very nice, but the beach is fantastic. They offer free bikes for you to ride anywhere on the island. Tough to ride too far anymore for me, but the 10 minute ride into the nearby bakery in the morning is always worth the trip.

We are booked at The Sands at Grace Bay

Thanks everyone for your feedback - looking forward to OCT!

Re: Turks and Caicos - 10/21/2016 12:00 PM

Arrived two days ago and the weather is iffy. Hurricane Matthew passed the island with very little rain and wind, but Nicole caused quite a stir. Water is very dirty and rough. We were in T&C three years ago and instantly noticed a huge price difference from our last trip. Taxi from the airport was $50/person no matter where you were going. Prices for mixed drinks are close to $15 and beer is around $5 a bottle. The ferry to North Caicos is now $50 round trip. Hamburger is $10 and many wines at the grocery store can top $100 a bottle. Price on a $2.99 magazine had a sticker on it and is now $7.99. The best buy so far was the car rental at Scooter Bob's which was the same as 3 years ago. Bob and his son Amos are great guys and give super service. I think tourism has really caught on in T&C and they are draining it for all its worth. Worry for the country that the prices will nix the trip for many. Will be our last trip to the island.

Welp...the forecast for next week is nothing but rain...this is kind of a bummer...but, it is paid for, so off we go...

Re: Turks and Caicos - 10/22/2016 11:53 AM

My wife read my comment and said I made a slight mistake in what I wrote. The ferry ride is $50/person round trip, but the taxi is $20 instead of $50. Don't want to scare anyone away due to my mistake. And yes, it has been raining as horncusker has said, since we arrived. Going on four days now.

Re: Turks and Caicos - 10/22/2016 12:23 PM

Thanks for the correction, but I think I'd be more scared off by the $15 mixed drink!!! There's no call for prices like that in the Caribbean. Too many other places to go that are just as easy to get to and lots more reasonable.

Re: Turks and Caicos - 10/25/2016 10:18 PM

We did work in T&C a few years back (as well as visited as a tourist other trips) and I seem to remember that import duty was the only form of tax and since almost everything is imported, every thing is crazy expensive. Add to that a far amount of government officials taking from the pot. I used to follow the news closely and last I heard the top dog was imprisioned for taking funds.

Our last trip was in 2008 or 2009 and I remember crazy high food and drink prices back then as well. I don't mind higher prices, to a point, at vacation destinations but the costs were high enough that it gave me pause.

We stayed at the Royal West Indies way back in 2007 and loved it there. The Mango Reef restaurant was there then but is now located elsewhere. Excellent T-bone and other dishes. Staying on Grace Bay is amazing.
Is the Comfort Suites/Port of Call Resort still in the port of call area? That was much less expensive but not on the beach!

Re: Turks and Caicos - 11/01/2016 10:20 PM

Yes, Port of Call Resort is still there...we shared a taxi with some people that were staying there...looked very nice. The Sands at Grace Bay was everything that we wanted

We rented a place advertised on VRBO. We asked the rented a generic question. When they answered via email they said they'd take the rental without going through the service as to avoid the extra charge. Something to consider.
