Tybee Island, anyone been there - 07/20/2016 10:05 PM

Finding I am making a last minute trip there next week. Tripadvisor doesn't have great insight. Anyone been there?

Absolutely! We go several times a year. However we always stay on River street in Savannah and make the 30 minute drive to Tybee for the day. LOT's of VRBO rentals on the island as well as the Desoto Beach Hotel as the largest. Coco's, AJ's, and the Crab shack are three great places for dining specifically seafood, oysters, crab, etc.

I just looked at TA and it gives numerous reviews on the lodging and restaurants.

Rick, I didn't see your info, I am rarely even on this site anymore. Tybee was a nice village, I can say nothing bad about the people we met. The nasty brown water was a huge turn off for us. We did find some nice places for a beer, AJ, Coco, Thought the Crab Shack was more of a tourist trap that should have been in Destin. Savannah was nice to wander around.

Did see turtles hatching late one night, so that was a big plus. But a week there was too long. Checked it off the list and don't need to go back

I incorrectly assumed that since you took time to post a request for info that you would have checked back for replies. BTW the nasty brown water is due to the fact that the sea bottom is brown sand not the white you're used to.

If all you had at AJ's and CoCo's was beer and no food you missed out but hey more for us.

Rick, actually got distracted and forgot to check back. I had less than 24 hours notice of the venture. Did eat at AJ and Coco, both were good, but not the water view I am used to.

Pretty sure the water quality is due to the Savannah River and not the sand color. Brown sand won't stain swim suits, but muddy water would. Visability was about 4 inches. Very nice community, very safe and can say only bad part was the brown water.

Not from the Savannah River as the water all along the coast down to about north FL is the same. I personally don't care to go into the ocean around there as I like clear blue water as well.

Hi there we are going to Savannah for first time for just a long weekend, and staying on Bay Street I believe...any recommendations of things or places to eat that are must see or do in short amount of time? Thanks in advance

Absolutely! Just for sake of reference, River Street actually fronts the Savannah River while Bay Street is the next one up.
Places I highly recommend all on River Street are:
The Cotton Exchange Tavern - awesome clam or crab chowder, grouper fingers, various sandwiches. Sit at the bar for a great time with the bartenders and meeting other visitors! If you're there during the day at the bar, ask for Jean and tell her Rick & Belinda say hi!
Huey's - love their Cajun breakfast menu and Bloody Mary's!
Tubby's - upstairs from Huey's for a great outdoor deck overlooking the river, usually has live music outside.
Rock's On the River - atop the Bohemian Hotel for drinks and sitting out on the open air rooftop looking down along the river!
River House Seafood Restaurant - very good menu with some great true seafood dishes. you can usually sit outside at sidewalk tables if weather permits.
Vic's On the River - for more elegant dining yet a relaxed atmosphere, i.e. you can go there without having to get "dressed up". Usually has a piano player.

Off of River Street:

The Old Pink House - splurge and have dinner in this beautiful old antebellum mansion on Abercorn just a 1/2 block off Bay Street!! Fun jazz bar in the basement!

B. Matthews - for a unique breakfast/lunch menu in a nautical setting. Also on Bay Street.

City Market - just a few blocks in from the river full of various shops, restaurants, and usually a live band outside on the weekends.

BTW if you're there for the 1st Friday of any month they always have fireworks over the river that night!

That should give you enough to do. We're going back to stay at our favorite place The River Street Inn this December and can't wait!

Just wanted to let you know we had a great time in Savannah and your restaurant recommendations came in handy. We started out with a burger at Tubby's (we split the Wormsloe)it was delish and went back again later for HH. We also ate at River House, Boars Head, and the AWESOME Old Pink House by far the best meal of the trip. Unfortunately it was the first dinner we had so nothing could quite live up to it. Thanks again for all the suggestions!

We did stop at Rocks on the river but they were having what appeared to be a large wedding party outside so did not stay. It is a great view though. Never did see Vic's on the River. Where is it located? We looked at Belford's while shopping at City Market. Not a huge fan of Cajun so passed on Huey's. Can't wait to go back and explore more. Only three days and so many choices!

Vic's is just a few doors down from Tubby's with the main entry up on the Bay Street level. The entry for Vic's on River Street is their coffee/pastry shop with an elevator up.

No wonder we didn't see it. We were looking for full restaurant on River Street. Makes sense now think we looked in and saw coffee bar and just thought it was a breakfast place. Sure hope Matthew doesn't make a mess of the whole area. thanks again!
