Maine in October

Maine in October - 03/14/2017 01:51 AM

We are thinking of renting a small (2 bedroom) house on the Maine coast this October. My daughter is a nurse in Portland and we would like to take a week to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday. I have not been to Maine for 50 years - spent many Summer's there as a kid. We have looked at the usual (VRBO, AirBnB) but wonder if there are local rental agencies and/or??? Any and all suggestions are welcome.

What town do you want to base out of? We have travelled the third week of October for many years to NE. There seems to be a lot of seasonal closings once you get north of Kennebunk.

Thanks for the input. We are wide open as to where to base out of - no pre-conceived notions.

I know you mentioned renting a small 2 bedroom house, but you should at least look into the Bar Harbor Inn. Beautiful, well kept old hotel that is amazing. Bar Harbor is such a quaint town. Hotel Restaurant has succulent whole lobsters that melt in your mouth. Lobster museum in town that is full of amazing lobster history. Just a thought.

Depending on how late in the month you go check for closings on restaurants. Columbus Day is a big cutoff date. The later in the month you go the more south you should stay

My wife and I have visited Maine in October twice. Both times were very enjoyable. Did not have any issues with closings. Looking north of Portland you will find the towns of Camden and Rockport. Both are quintessential Maine harbor towns. If you travel south of Portland, Ogunquit is a nice artist colony. Great restaurants and bars. Had dinner at Arrows which was a top five!

How about Kennebunkport where the best food truck EVER just moved back home up there from Atlanta - Tasting Maine!! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/dine.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Clapping.gif" alt="" />

Thompson's Cottages in gorgeous New Harbor, adjacent to the famous Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, has a wonderful variety of cottages for rent, all very clean and meticulously maintained. (I have no personal or business connection, only as a perfectly satisfied client.)

Are you still looking this close to October or are all your plans sewn up? My wife and I went to Portland in October of 2014 and loved it.
