Jamaican $ or U.S. $ or Canadian $ - 04/07/2015 12:24 PM

Marenda and I are off to Jamaica on Friday for the first time in many years and staying in an all inclusive in Runaway Bay.
I am not sure whether to take Jamaican $ with me or just take my Canadian $ or U.S.
Any Quick advice you folks can give me would be appreciated. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Groovin.gif" alt="" />

We found that US is widely accepted (rarely see Jamaican $). Some will accept Canadian $ but be careful of the exchange rate they charge...it can be outrageous. I recommend taking a few hundred US $, and lots of small bills for tips and small purchases...Jamaicans rarely have change! That sounds like good advice John. If I go 'outside' to a restaurant what can I expect to pay for a lobster dinner?

Not really sure as the resort we go to (Hedo) has a lobster night. I suggest asking the staff at the resort as they are usually very helpful. There is a lobster season when it is not available but not sure when that is.
My guess is that Lobster on the beach would be around $20 and a higher end restaurant upwards from there. Remember that they never have any change. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" />

For going off resort for a meal, I'd just use a credit card. You really should take at least one credit card with you, in case of emergencies anyway. And, as John said, bring SMALL change, for tips and any purchases off resort.

No Lobster April 1st to June 30th.
Closed season due to breeding time.
Anybody selling lobster is doing it illegally.
US dollars are accepted everywhere, but exchange rate can add cost. If you plan on spending outside the resort, I'd advise converting to Ja currency. Easily done at Cambios all around resort areas. You'll get a fair exchange rate.
