Easy beef brisket - 05/04/2009 05:17 PM

1 beef brisket
1 envelope onion soup
1 jar chili sauce
1 can Coke or Pepsi, (not diet)

-Using a Dutch Overn, pour onion soup, chili sauce, and Coke over brisket. Cook 5-6 hours at 250, until fork tender.

***This is delicious and the sauce is wonderful, used as a gravy. You can also use a crockpot instead of a dutch oven.

I've used Coke before for brisket... makes a wonderful gravy... I'm cooking it at the moment also. I didn't have an onion soup mix, so just threw in a few spices and some onions. We'll see how it turns out!

I'll be interested in hearing how it turns out, Carol. We usually have enough for a second dinner-I like to put it on french rolls, with the leftover sauce-yummy!

I love it cold the next day on rye with mayo... Yumm...
usually freeze the leftover gravy to add to the gravy for making swedish meatballs...

It was good, but truthfully, not that tender. I put the meat in at 9 this morning, cooked on low in crockpot until 4, then put in 3 potatoes and an onion, chopped, and cooked on high until 7. Possibly I should have cooked the potatoes in the microwave and then put in??

IMO, a crockpot doesn't do justice to a brisket...
it just never comes out right...
I always use a Cast Iron Dutch Oven... and cook it at about 250-275F until it is fork tender...

I agree. I always use my cast iron dutch oven and it is always fork tender, but the friend who gave me the recipe always uses her crockpot. I'll have to ask her how long she cooks hers. Could the dry onion soup possibly have anything to do with the tenderness?

Dunno. My crockpot is really old. OK< let's say that we got it for a wedding present, so that shows how old it is! Possibly new crockpots cook things faster.
