Snorkle from shore on Tortola

Snorkle from shore on Tortola - 01/25/2015 02:17 PM

Good Morning, After 12 years of Spring Breaks in STJ...we're staying at CGB for a week in a villa( I wish it was a boat). We will have a car all week and would like a few snorkel ideas all depending on the North Shore swells. We are also planning a full day trip over to VG on Friday to drive our party of 9 around and see what we can do about the local economy. We might even rent a boat for a day as well. I've been a formumite since '08 on VIOL and appreciate fellow forumites for their 'local' knowledge.

Enjoy the journey always...
Dave

Long Bay on Beef Island near the airport is protected from swells and has a nice grassy bay with turtles, rays, squid/cuttlefish, octopus, conch... We like the fringing reef at Brewers Bay. If you get a boat Monkey Point on Guana Island is well known, we also like Diamond Reef off Great Camenoe for drifting.

On VG, hit Spring Bay. The three bays you can walk from there, and swim to the Baths, are great fun. The outer reef at Mahoe Bay is cool when things are calm.

Tortola is a much bigger island than St. John and most of the beaches are exposed to north. Respect the swell and surf if it is up!

Cheers, RickG

When it's calm, Savannah Bay on VG is like a big aquarium and easy to walk in from shore.

You can still see some life in Smuggler's Cove, though it's really degraded from when we were last there 2 years ago. The whole right (west) side is about done, but there's still some decent coral and a good amount of fish to the left side. You want it to be calm so you can keep to the shallow water. We saw a lot of parrotfish of varying sizes, few yellowtails, a couple of others.

Brewers Bay on Tortola has been pretty good in the past PLUS you get to eat a great cheesburger at Nicole's! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Clapping.gif" alt="" />
